A Quick Recap of the Outer Banks
For those unfamiliar, Outer Banks is set in a coastal town in North Carolina where two rival groups of teenagers— the wealthy Kooks and the working-class Pogues—clash over a hidden treasure. Over the seasons, we’ve followed the Pogues—John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope, JJ, and Cleo—as they search for treasure while navigating personal struggles and relationships.
Picking Up the Pieces in Season 4
Season 4 kicks off with the Pogues fresh off their big win: they found the long-lost gold. With this newfound wealth, the group opens a business, but it doesn’t take long for them to burn through their earnings. Forced to go on another treasure hunt, their next adventure brings even more danger, betrayal, and shocking revelations.
Here’s where each of the characters stands by the end of Part 1:
John B Routledge

John B is still grieving the loss of his father, which weighs heavily on him throughout the season. Despite his sadness, he tries to move forward with Sarah, talking about their future together. They even discuss marriage and starting a family. However, John B’s unresolved emotions often cloud his judgment, leading him into more treasure-hunting chaos. By the end of Part 1, John B is emotionally overwhelmed and fails to notice that Sarah and Pope are in serious trouble.
Sarah Cameron

Sarah, estranged from her family after the death of her father, seeks comfort in her friends, the Pogues. Her relationship with John B is strong, though she urges him to take things slow, especially when it comes to starting a family. The couple joins Cleo and Pope on a treasure hunt in Charleston, but things take a dark turn. Sarah and Pope end up trapped underground as the water rises around them, leaving their fate uncertain.
Kiara Carrera

Kiara, who has started a relationship with JJ, is excited about their new business venture. Unfortunately, her parents disown her early in the season, adding to her emotional stress. Despite this, Kiara remains focused on keeping the group’s business afloat. She and JJ dive deep into the treasure hunt, and they both suffer from the bends after a dangerous underwater mission. Kiara also continues to clash with the wealthy Kooks, creating more tension for her and the group.
JJ Maybank

JJ's reckless behavior is at an all-time high in Season 4. Desperate to maintain their new lifestyle, he bets their last bit of money on a motorcycle race— and loses. His risky decisions push him deeper into the treasure hunt, especially after discovering a mystery tied to the infamous pirate, Blackbeard. Near the end of Part 1, JJ experiences a life-changing moment: he learns that the man he thought was his father isn’t his biological dad. This revelation sets the stage for more emotional turmoil in the second half of the season.
Pope Heyward

Pope tries to be the voice of reason for the group, constantly reminding them of their financial struggles. He’s determined to find more treasure to save their business, but things go south quickly. After Cleo is kidnapped, the Pogues lose an important artifact that leads them to Blackbeard’s treasure. Pope and Sarah get trapped underground in a flooded Charleston church, leaving viewers wondering if they’ll make it out alive.
Cleo

Cleo, the newest member of the Pogues, takes charge in the group’s new business. However, their money problems force her to join the treasure hunt. Cleo reunites with her old employer, Terrance, who betrays her by taking her hostage. Though Terrance tries to protect her, he ends up dead. The Pogues must bury his body before continuing their dangerous quest.
Rafe Cameron

Sarah’s brother, Rafe, is still reeling from their father’s death. As the new head of the Cameron family, Rafe is overwhelmed by people trying to get their hands on the family fortune. His romantic relationship with Sofia becomes complicated when it’s revealed that she’s using him to get money. The end of Part 1 hints that Rafe may be in more trouble than he realizes, as Sofia's true intentions remain unclear.
What’s Next?
With Sarah and Pope's lives hanging in the balance, JJ dealing with a major family secret, and Cleo mourning the loss of a friend, the second part of Outer Banks Season 4 is sure to be filled with even more twists and turns. Fans can expect plenty of action, drama, and romance as the Pogues continue their treasure hunt when the show returns in November.
