North Shore Music Theatre's 'Tootsie': Big Laughs with a Powerful Message
'Tootsie' is a blast!

I’m only trying to improve the world while dressed in stiletto heels!
Tootsie is North Shore Music Theatre's latest musical, based on the 1982 film. Struggling actor, Michael Dorsey attempts to show Hollywood a thing or two about gender norms. He disguises himself as a woman named, Dorothy Michaels. In an unexpected turn of events, Michael discovers the complexities of gender norms and champions women’s rights.
Tootsie is a blast! I can’t remember the last time I barreled in laughter with an audience like this. So far, Tootsie is my favorite musical of the year! North Shore Music Theatre’s Tootsie is a comical story with relatable themes. Be the leader and help make a difference.
Kyle Nicholas Anderson is tremendous as Michael Dorsey until making an extraordinary transformation into Dorothy Michaels. Anderson completely disappears into the role. Dorothy’s astute leadership helps women in the entertainment industry speak up. Michael’s disguise leads to comical incidents and a profound story of growth.
T. Shyvonne Stewart is as excellent as Julie. I wasn’t expecting the relationship that developed between Dorothy and Julie. Their relationship is a positive example of love in all its comical triangles. It’s okay to love whomever you want.
The ensemble is equally strong, contributing to the fast-paced comical energy. No small part exists in the theater. Every character is important in this story, demonstrating a side of the challenging entertainment industry.
Michael’s roommate, Jeff (Joshua Morgan) has no idea how to deal with Michael’s double life. Morgan’s deadpan deliveries are a riot! I got a kick at how Jeff helps Michael in and out of his disguise.
Matt Allen (Ron) gave off Robin Williams vibes when he was teaching wild dance moves. Brooke Jacob delivers a standout performance as Sally, a young woman on the verge of a breakdown. She wants to find her dream role, but it’s not an easy pursuit. Luke Hamilton (Max) wins the Most Laughter Award for his attempts at singing offkey love songs to Dorothy.
Tootsie is a vibrant musical. Technicians are hard at work with set changes, dazzling light cues, and gorgeous costumes. Anderson’s impressive costume, hair, and makeup transformations transpire at lightning speed!
Accompanied by a live orchestra, songs include ‘What’s Gonna Happen,’ ‘I Like What She’s Doing,’ and ‘Unstoppable.’ Each dance number is energetic and upbeat. My only criticism is that the show ends too abruptly without a final song number.
Better buckle your seatbelts because Tootsie is a hilarious show! The audience was laughing out of their seats. Along with rehearsing showstopping numbers, director Richard J. Hinds paid significant attention to the show’s comedy. Comedy is a tough component to land, but every actor achieved impeccable comedic timing.
Some examples include delayed responses or exaggerated reactions. I will never forget the audience cackling when one character has a realization, delaying the response for a good thirty seconds. Tootsie is the show to attend if you need a laugh.
Tootsie is more than just a laugh-out-comedy. It’s about standing up, taking charge, and making a difference. But, if you want to make a change, do it in your own shoes. While Dorothy’s leadership becomes successful, it makes things difficult for Michael.
Although Michael’s innovative decisions solved his problem of advancing his career, more problems arose than expected, especially (strange) love triangles.
Tootsie is a hysterical musical with a strong message about being yourself. If you’re looking for a night of laughter and musical entertainment don’t miss Tootsie at North Shore Music Theatre. I had an exciting evening and will never forget this experience.
