My Favorite Dark Fantasy Anime
Day 16 of the 30 day anime challenge

I am excited to be writing the second half of this challenge! Not just because I am almost done, but because the next 15 questions are going to be way more fun to write about. This was a lot more of a challenge than I originally thought. Writing every day might be a habit for some but it has been a struggle for me. I am proud of myself for making it this far and I am so grateful for everyone's support. Whether you have read 1 of my blogs or all of them I appreciate it and hope I have been entertaining you.

I discovered the idea for the 30-day anime challenge because I saw this post on Pinterest and thought it was a fun little challenge to do for the first month of the New Year. I did a challenge similar to this back in 2013 so I am curious to see if my tastes have changed much in the past 10 years.
Since I found it too hard to just pick 1 answer I have been picking 5 answers for each question. I would love for you to hear your answer in the comments below

Day 16 Favorite Fantasy / Supernatural anime
I watch a lot of different genres of anime, so to my surprise, I don't want either of these genres. I went through every anime I watched this past year and only 5 fit in that genre. The 5 I did manage to watch are all dark fantasy, not happy magical worlds. I guess I don't naturally gravitate to the fantasy or supernatural genre which makes no sense, because I love reading about fantasy and enjoy live-action fantasy movies and shows. If you have some good fantasy anime to recommend please comment them below, I'd love to check some out.
With that in mind, I want to still stick with the theme of writing about 5, so I am going to write about the 5 I watched this past year, I did enjoy all of them but I might not consider them my favorites, but I only have 5 to write about.
Again I'd love to give this genre more love and attention, so if you have a favorite fantasy or supernatural anime please comment them below!!
Let's get into some dark fantasy anime!!

Beyond the Boundry (Kyoukai no Kanata)
Storyline: The dark fantasy follows a high school sophomore named Akihito Kanbara. Although the boy appears human, he is half Youmu and invulnerable to wounds because he can heal quickly. One day, Akihito meets freshman Mirai Kuriyama when it seems she is about to jump from the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is considered heresy among members of the spirit world. Disturbing events begin to unfold after Akihito saves Mirai.

I absolutely loved this show!! It has the right amount of thrill and comedy to break up the horror. I thought this was an extremely creative story, with amazingly written characters. You will sob like a baby at the end just a heads up. I also watched this in one sitting so sit down and get comfy because you will not want to stop watching.

Tokyo Ghoul
Storyline: The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious "ghouls" who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.

If you haven't seen Tokyo Ghoul yet shame on you. I was obsessed with this show when it first came out. I had never seen anything like it before. I did only watch season 1 when it first came out because that was the only season out, so this year I decided to watch through the rest of the seasons and it was just as good as I remembered. It has the perfect mix of horror, thrill, and creative story. It is very disturbing and goes through some gory topics and scenes, so if you have a weak stomach this might not be the anime for you. I even caught myself having to take a break and watch something happy after an especially dark episode.

Blood Lad
Storyline: Blood Lad follows Staz, a vampire from the Demon World who avoids being an otaku for human goods - especially manga and anime. The accidental arrival of Fuyumi Yanagi, who wandered into the Demon World through a portal, changes his life. Whilst he fights a territory rival she is eaten by a carnivorous plant. Staz pledges to help bring her back to life

This is such an underrated anime. I loved it and was so bummed they didn't come out with a season 2. Totally weird story and characters that you will love. I have never seen an anime like it before and don't know why this wasn't more popular. The art style is so interesting and the storyline line is super creative, add in a twist of humor and you got yourself a binge-worthy anime.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Storyline: One night, 14-year-old Madoka Kaname has a terrible nightmare - against the backdrop of a devastated city, she witnesses a girl fight a losing battle against a dreadful being lingering above, while a cat-like magical creature tells Madoka the only way to change that tragic outcome is for her to make a contract with him and become a magical girl. The next day, the teen's dream seemingly becomes reality as the girl she saw in her dream - Homura - arrives at Mitakihara Middle School as a transfer student, mysteriously warning Madoka to stay just the way she is. But when later on she and her best friend Sayaka encounter the same cat-like magical creature from her dream - who introduces himself as Kyubey - the pair discovers that magical girls are real, and what's more, they can choose to become one. All they must do is sign a contract with Kyubey and agree to take on the duty to fight abstract beings called 'witches' that spread despair to the human world, and in return, each one of them will be granted any single wish they desire. However, as Homura's omen suggests, there might be far more to becoming a magical girl than Madoka and Sayaka realize.

What… the… F**k…. I could honestly leave that as the full review but I will give you a little more. That is all you will say the whole show. I did mention I only saw dark fantasy so you have some idea it is scary. I had no idea. My sister told me this was a fun magical girl anime and I had to watch it with her. I said What the F**k the whole show. This show will blow your brains out and then stab you in the heart and then have your stomach implode. I cannot think of a better way to describe this show.

Soul Eater
Storyline: Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 duos. These pairs are a partnership between a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to reach a ranking of "Death Scythe" (and thus fit for use by the Shinigami) they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch. However, forces outside of the Academy make it a more challenging feat causing trouble around the world.

I love this anime to pieces. It was one of the very first I ever watched so there might be some nostalgia attached to it. But I did recently rewatch it and I got to say, I was blown away again. In the beginning episodes, you will be somewhat annoyed by the characters, the epically black star takes some getting used to. Once you get hooked on the story and the character development you will be hooked for life. I think that anyone who watches this show will be blown away by the creativity and thrilling storyline. This is over 10 years old so you have to give the animation a little slack but I still think it holds its own.

I could not believe how little fantasy I watch this past year. I want to watch some magical anime with dragons, swords, etc. I have been watching anime for a long time, and have seen plenty of fantasy anime over the years but I couldn't even remember enough about them to write my thoughts. I hope this list of dark fantasies is good enough for today.
Have you seen any of the anime I listed? What is your favorite fantasy anime?
