It's tough to avoid comparing Lee Won-tae's "The Gangster the Cop the Devil" with films like "Train to Busan," "The Age of Shadows," and "The Wailing" considering how firmly Korean cinema has recently come to dominate the midnight-movie/genre slots at European film festivals. While the movie falls short of being a true Korean genre classic in terms of energy, inventiveness, and ingenuity, it does serve as a showcase for Don Lee, commonly known as Ma Dong-Seok, the lead actor.
Lee, who plays the titular character, exudes a brazen personality that the other two performers find hard to match. Jung Tae-seok (Kim Moo-yeol) is portrayed as "the cop," a loose-cannon police detective who has been mocked for a few decades. This representation of Jung Tae-seok is incredibly stale. He is a thorn in his captain's side due of his disobedience, especially when it comes to breaking gambling restrictions.

Despite this, he has a suspicion that one man is responsible for a succession of random killings on highways. That man is "the devil" (Kim Seong-gyu), a psychotic psychopath who stabs a driver to death with a kitchen knife after randomly rear-ending them on a desolate stretch of typically rain-washed road. He is irritating but not menacing, and his part in the plot is mostly mechanical.
Cop Jung and Gangster Jang must work together to take down the man acting outside the law totally after he attacks Jang Dong-su (Lee), a strong gang boss who survives the attack and injures his attacker. It creates the ground for a battle between those who have a code and those who don't.

The sophisticated and skillful photography of Park Se-Seung highlights the sharp gap between the characters' ambitions. It also has a rough finish. To add more flare, action scenes are cast in monochromatic green or blue light and staged fluidly and usually with wit. On the other side, Jo Young-uk's soundtrack is obtrusive and somewhat nondescript.

The best part about the movie, despite these problems, is Don Lee's amazing performance. He constantly exudes an enormous physical presence, but he also has the most intriguing inside character story. Jang's urge to wreak revenge on the accused "devil" is motivated less by his physiological wounds and more by the terrible, unstable loss of face that suffering a random stabbing will generate among his gangster associates. For Jang, reputation is a matter of business, and Lee provides a compelling portrayal as the gangster's coldly calculated calculation.

It seems reasonable that Sylvester Stallone's Balboa Productions would secure the rights for the American adaptation while retaining Lee on board to repeat his part. It's hard to find a foreign picture that might actually benefit from its Hollywood adaptation, but this one is very entertaining. With Lee's skills on display, there is a decent likelihood that the remake will fix some of the film's lesser parts. In any case, spectators will find the movie to be undemanding, enjoyable, and an exciting experience that they won't soon forget.

Overall, "The Gangster the Cop the Devil" is a polished action movie that enjoyably exhibits Don Lee's exceptional acting ability. Fans of the genre will still find enough of thrills and excitement in it, even though it may not quite approach the heights of other recent Korean cult classics. The movie is amusing and worth watching for its fluid and inventive action sequences, polished and skilled photography, and Don Lee's engaging acting.

But there are some flaws with the movie as well. The characterization of "the cop" is clichéd and insulting, while "the devil" is a fairly dull and motivation less figure. The movie is funny but forgettable, and the music can be obtrusive and monotonous.

but with Balboa Productions from Sylvester Stallone. By gaining the U.S. remake rights and retaining Don Lee on board, the Hollywood remake may be able to strengthen some of the weaker features of the original while maintaining its most engaging element. In the conclusion, "The Gangster, the Cop, and the Devil" is a solid and fascinating addition to the Korean action genre, even though it isn't a revolutionary masterpiece.
