Movie Lover Haven: A Game, A Subscription, and A Magazine
my dream business endeavour, all about my favourite topic: MOVIES
I absolutely LOVE movies! I tend to shy away from calling myself a "movie buff" or "cinephile" -- there are so many movies I feel I still NEED to see before I can officially use one of those titles. But maybe ... film aficionado?
I know I'm not alone -- we live in the time of streaming services (Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Crave, Disney+ ... too many to count!). Who doesn't love a good movie night once a week? When I was a teenager, my friends and I enjoyed "cheap Tuesday" at the movie theatres, for discounted movie deals. My boyfriend and I now make a habit of watching a film or two each weekend. And, thanks to streaming services (and the fact that my boyfriend bought me a DVD player for my birthday this year!), I also enjoy an extra movie or two during the week -- perks of working from home.
To be honest, I'd love to take my love of movies a step further and turn movie-watching into a business endeavour ... mainly, movie trivia.
The Game
One of my biggest dreams, for years now, has been to create my own movie trivia game. I own a couple, but I've always felt that something was missing from them ... someTHINGS, actually. For example, when I play with other people (whose taste in movies isn't as wide as mine; they have a couple favourite genres they stick to) they always comment on how they wish more of the questions would be multiple choice. Also, personally, I like the idea of having a base game ... but then why not create expansions, to include more titles?
If the game takes off like I envision in my dreams, I'd like to include some sort of players club or membership -- something exclusive for serious players who'd be available to playtest future expansions.
The Subscription
Phase 2 of the business would be to add a monthly subscription for a movie trivia night. I occasionally went to regular trivia nights in university, at the campus bar, but I think it'd be cool to host a MOVIE trivia night, specifically.
For a small monthly subscription fee ($2?), anyone wanting to host a monthly movie trivia night would get categories and questions sent to them -- not necessarily questions from the board game talked about above, as the people would probably want to have some exclusive perks to the subscription. (Although, if it did include questions from the game, perhaps they'd be the non-multiple choice version ... after all, trivia nights are typically done in teams, so more brain power to come up with the answers!)
If possible, I'd also love to have a special streaming service set up, so that the movies chosen for that month's trivia questions are available for hosts and teams to watch in preparation for trivia night. May need to charge more, or set up a separate subscription ... but it would make sense to make the films available, right?
The Magazine
I've always wanted to create (or at least write for) a magazine. I most likely will create a magazine, in another topic, but I think it would be so incredible to create a movie magazine -- talk to actors and actresses and directors about behind the scenes stuff, have other movie fans writing articles on movie topics they're passionate about (favourite films, for example) ... so many big ideas with this one! This would combine two of my greatest loves: movies and writing!
Conclusion
The thing that all three of these projects have in common is a way for me to connect with other movie lovers. With the game, I would love to have player feedback and input (have the people vote on expansion possibilities, for example). With the subscription, the hosts would get sent the questions, but I have also considered myself hosting a monthly movie trivia night as well (maybe that's a deluxe version -- $5 subscription, and potential for cash prizes). With the magazine, I'd bring in writers who are as passionate about movies as I am -- not necessarily in the critic-sense (although critiquing movies does have its place), but more like movies are FUN; I want to work with people who experience sheer joy when they watch films.
