Marvel 2023

Looking Forward

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

There has been much discussion on the internet about the quality of Marvel’s phase 4, most of the criticism uses the phrase “quantity over quality” now quite frankly that's a bullshit copout phrase that people who are incapable of an intelligent opinion use, but Marvel does not seem to be slowing down so I would like to dive into the slate for 2023 and discuss their possibilities.

First up is Ant-Man and Wasp: Quantamania, now there has also been some drama surrounding this film due to the random and unnecessary recasting of Cassie Lang. However despite the new addition to the MCU’s cast all looks well with the movie. This seems to be an all or nothing film, meaning that it's going to either be incredible or truly awful with no wiggle room for something in between. Releasing on February 17th this will be the film that debuts Kang the Conqueror who is going to be a major player as the MCU progresses. So if done correctly this is going to be the film that sets the tone for the foreseeable future of the MCU.

Moving on to May we are getting the 3rd and what seems to be the final chapter of the Guardians of the Galaxy saga. James Gunn, who is now heading up DC Studios films makes his last Marvel outing with this final Guardians movie. We know that at least a portion of the film has to be finding Gamora and getting her to rejoin the team, the trailer reveals that we might be getting a closer look at Rocket’s backstory and we will be finally getting to see Adam Warlock on screen. With several cameo appearances as well as some heavy comic book influence the film maintains the tone and comedy that Gunn has built with this trilogy. Now who's to say if this is the end of the road for the Guardians or who they will be passed off to if their story is to continue. For now we must enjoy Gunn’s last contribution to the MCU.

Though not technically Marvel it is a highly anticipated superhero film so of course coming to us on June 2nd is Across the Spider-Verse. Not up for debate the first film; Into the Spider-Verse is undoubtedly the best Spiderman movie in existence, that alone makes me very personally excited for its sequel. A true multiverse film Miles and Gwen seem to be going on an inter-universe adventure.

In the heart of the summer the lovely ladies of The Marvels are coming to the big screen in July. After the incredible Ms. Marvel TV show, WandaVision and the first Captain Marvel, these three superpowered women are finally going to be on screen together. Marvel is getting its third female lead film and I genuinely can not wait. Nia DeCosta and Megan McDonnell are bringing us a fully female powered team and I can not wait to see Kamala meet her hero.

In totally random and unnecessary news on October 6th audiences are getting a Kraven the Hunter movie. A film no one asked for…literally no one….ever.

In the years to come there will be many more projects but as for 2023 and the big screen we only have a few projects to look forward to. This should quiet some of the “quantity over quality” talk, which was never the problem anyway. The real problem is and has always been stories no one asked for and poorly executed ‘development’. It actually has nothing to do with the amount of projects being cranked out Kevin Fiege is actually very good at keeping things rolling in a controlled manner. 2023 seems to actually be a solid slate of films and I look forward to analyzing them as they are released.
