MANWHA : The Awakening of Kairo: A Gate Beyond Shadows
When a bullied orphan discovers he is the last shadow born, his life and the fate of the world changes forever.

Kairo Shin had always felt invisible.
Not just to the kids at school who whispered behind his back, but to the world itself. Orphaned at six, ignored in foster homes, bullied by teachers and students alike—Kairo had mastered the art of silence.
But silence does not mean weakness.
It was on the eve of his seventeenth birthday when everything changed.
The storm came suddenly—dark clouds swirling like ink in the sky, winds screaming like banshees. He stood alone on the rooftop of his school, watching the chaos unfold below. His classmates had all evacuated when the emergency sirens blared, but Kairo stayed.
Maybe he wanted the world to end.
But instead, it opened.
A tear—a gate—ripped across the sky. Not metaphorically. Literally. A black crack shimmered above the city, pulsing like a heartbeat. Then came the shadows.
Creatures. Twisted, grotesque things made of smoke and bone. They poured through the gate and descended onto the city like a flood.
And one of them landed right in front of Kairo.
It snarled. Black eyes burning. Claws twitching. It lunged.
Kairo didn’t scream.
He didn’t even flinch.
Because in that moment, something inside him awakened.
A memory? No. A power.
His right eye burned violet. Symbols etched across his arm like molten tattoos. The world slowed. The monster's claws moved in slow motion.
And then—snap—the world fractured.
He saw two realities. One, the rooftop. The other, a realm of shifting shadows and silent screams. In that world, he stood not as a boy... but as something else. Something ancient. Something feared.
A voice whispered in his mind:
“Shadowborn. You are the last.”
With instinct not his own, Kairo moved. One motion. One thought. A blade of shadow extended from his arm and cleaved the beast in half.
Silence.
Then the gate flickered—and closed.
The next day, the news was everywhere.
"Sudden blackout. Mass hallucinations. Possible terrorist attack."
But no one remembered the shadows. No one except Kairo.
And the mark that now burned on his chest.
Days Later…
He avoided the foster center. He wandered the streets, unsure of what was real anymore.
Until he met her.
A girl with silver eyes and a coat stitched with ancient runes.
“You saw it,” she said.
Kairo stared at her. “The gate.”
She nodded. “They’re opening again. All over the world.”
“Who are you?”
She smiled. “Your guardian. And your kind... your power... it’s not from here.”
Kairo’s heart raced. “Then where?”
She lifted her hand. Shadows swirled into a map of a shattered kingdom. A world within a world. “The realm your ancestors sealed away. The Shadow Realm. They were warriors once. Kings. But they betrayed the light.”
“And me?” he asked.
“You’re the last Shadowborn. The heir to a kingdom of ghosts... and the only one who can stop the coming war.”
Kairo looked down at his hand. The black veins shimmered beneath his skin.
For the first time in his life, he wasn’t invisible.
He was hunted.
He was chosen.
And he was ready.
Ending Hook for Readers
Kairo’s journey is just beginning. His school bullies? Nothing compared to the assassins coming for him. The world he thought was boring? Only a mask for ancient powers, cursed bloodlines, and gates threatening to tear reality apart.
And the worst part?
Kairo might be the hero the world needs—or the villain who dooms it.
