'Life & Beth' is a coming-of-age series for adults.

Life never goes the way you expect it to. Make each day count.

Life & Beth is a 2022 Hulu series. After the unexpected death of her mother, Beth finds herself recounting all the events from her early teen years into adulthood. At a standstill, Beth attempts to figure herself out and a new pathway in life.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this series and I was debating all throughout the first couple of episodes if Life & Beth was worth the watch. Turns out, it is. This is a series for all adults. I found myself relating to the themes of this show, particularly about growth.

Amy Schumer has created an assortment of films, expressing her trademark comedy or a serious side that she wants to detail more to audiences. She is a good dramatic actress. Beth has always struggled.

Trying to get her life together and understand what the past means, Beth teaches audiences that you don’t need to have your life together. Imbuing her usual comedy, I’m impressed with Schumer’s emotional performance and her strong character arc.

The series includes a number of talents, some with different backgrounds in acting. Credits include Violet Young, Michael Rapaport, Yamaneika Saunders, Laura Benanti, and Michael Cera.

Recently, I watched Michael Cera in a couple of films, like Superbad. I like how the condition of his character is never outright stated. Cera made his performance authentic. Schumer and Cera did a wonderful job with the journey of their characters' relationship, establishing that with patience, you can make it work. That’s how life functions.

The cast highlight is Violet Young. As the younger version of Beth, Young was wonderful in the role. Having the opportunity to examine Beth’s life in her teen years, I was taken aback by Young’s emotional performance. Schumer and Young did a great job making their parts genuine. Your past self plays an influential role in your adult life.

It takes a bit for the series to get into the story. The humor is awkward. I thought that flashbacks didn’t relate to the main story, but that all changed. I noticed reviewers giving up on the series way too fast because of Schumer, but I beckon you to give it a chance.

Everyone behaves a certain way for a reason. Life is hard to figure out. I remember in my teen years, I thought we all had our lives figured out by our twenties. I laugh at that now. Nobody has their lives figured out in their 20s because we’re still growing.

We’ve all gone through things in our lives, particularly our past. It’s up to you how to overcome your problems and live the life that you want.

I found closure watching Life & Beth. Similar to Beth’s childhood, I also picked at my hair. It started at the beginning of my senior year in high school. Due to stress, I knotted up my hair. Just learning that there is a name for it (Trichotillomania) I feel at peace knowing why I did it.

Life & Beth is a coming-of-age story for adults. Amy Schumer created this series as a method to talk about her life. As Schumer said (and I agree), it’s also a therapeutic series for anyone who is struggling. Take time to figure out relationships, your path in life, and time to figure out yourself. Life isn’t going anywhere. You have to the time figure yourself out.

Go take a look at Life & Beth on Hulu. Do not turn it off after the first episode. It’s worth a watch.
