Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Eps. 1-2

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished about 9 hours ago 3 min read

With the disappointment that is House of the Dragon and the let down that was the ending of Game of Thrones, I am going into The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms very cautiously. Because as we have learned with the world of Westeros, just because a show starts off good or interesting does not mean that it is going to stay that way.

I know this is also an adaptation but I love going into these things blind to see if they can stand on their own so I have not read it. I like reading after the fact to judge it as an adaptation but I don’t like going in with expectations. So here we go.

See I don’t know if I love the lighter, more humorous tone off the bat. I think that might be something we could have eased into. The other Westeros shows are far darker and more serious. And though there are funny moments, we are dealing with pretty heavy material. I guess it's okay to have a project that is kind of the opposite. I think the problem is that the wild juxtaposition makes it feel like it doesn’t fit in the same universe.

Yeah this might be a little too dopey for me. I am not loving it so far. I am going to give it some time because I didn’t like Game of Thrones at first either, for much different reasons.

Duncan is hella tall, he’s got like a foot on everyone he stands near, you’d think they’d be begging for a knight with that much reach. Guys I am trying. I am just not into this at all. It's not funny, it's not interesting, there is no intrigue, nothing is happening.

Egg might be the reason I stick with this because he’s cute and adorable children will get me to watch just about anything.

I think the problem I have is how bumbling Dunc is. If he just had more confidence this might be worth watching. “Oh but his character arc” is inherently boring. It would be far more interesting to watch someone with confidence and determination beat the odds and overcome class differences to achieve their goal than to watch someone learn how to be a person. Honestly he’s really pissing me off. In the scene where he is begging the King and his court to let him compete, he’s so pathetic and extremely annoying. I think I actually yelled “oh my god shut the fuck up” at the TV.

I’m really gonna need more Egg if I am going to power through this show. I am literally so bored and I don’t care about the main character which is really gonna make this a rough watch. Does Egg know he’s a Targaryen? Is that why he’s bald? He’s a far more interesting character than this dumbass hedgeknight.

The jousting scene was the most interesting scene in these first two episodes. And not because of the actual jousting but because of Dunk’s panic attack, it actually gave him some character. Egg is a hilarious little boy and I love him. I would in fact die for this fictional child.

Overall I feel this is one project that I am going to have to force myself to watch for a while, but I really love Westeros so I am going to power through and hope that it gets better. I will say that by the end of the second episode I had less issues with the initial tone of the series. The problem now is that I really hate the main character. I don’t just not care about him, I think he is extremely irritating and I was truly happy when the episode was over.
