It Ends With Us

Review

It Ends With Us is a property that has always been surrounded by controversy. The original book has often been criticized for romanticizing domestic violence. Unfortunately that was something that was not fixed when adapted into a movie. It was only made worse. A lot of the issue actually surrounded the film's lead, Blake Lively. The internet finally caught on to the fact that she is truly a terrible person. Watch any interview with the Gossip Girl cast and you will see that none of that core group could stand her. Then we add in the fact that she went after Ryan Reynolds while he was still married. Sprinkle in the fact that they got married on a plantation. And top it off with the fact that they are both scabs who continued working during the strike. So when she used the promo of a domestic violence movie to promote her haircare line I was not in the least bit surprised. Framing it as a rom com was just icing on the shit cake. All that said I genuinely had to force myself through this movie.

Can I start this review by saying that a florist named Lily Bloom is perhaps the stupidest thing ever. It's literally something a 3rd grader would come up with.

Also they had to age up the characters because Blake so desperately wanted to be the leading lady and the woman is pushing 40. I think that inherently takes away from the story. Younger women are far more likely to find themselves in abusive relationships making your protagonist older steps on your main through line here.

If this is really how they met and she still chose to get into a relationship with him….girl you met him in the middle of him having a violent outburst. I’m sorry I don't want to victim blame anybody but if the first time you meet someone they are throwing things…anything that happens in that relationship is entirely your fault. I truly can not fathom having empathy for someone who puts themselves in that situation when the warning signs were there from literally second 1.

He was also like immediately creepy. They’ve been talking for all of 30 seconds and he says he wants to have sex with her…EW. Yeah, I’m sorry she totally did this to herself. Time to accept that sometimes things are your fault. If you don’t see red flags when you aren’t in danger I simply no longer care that you can’t get out after you got yourself trapped. Let’s learn to have some common sense.

Young Lily should have just been the protagonist the whole time. The actress is just so much better.

I've never seen two actors have less chemistry than Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. It could be because Blake is just a stunningly poor actress, it could be because apparently they didn’t get along on set. I don’t know but I don’t believe this relationship at all.

Also she grew up in an abusive household…literally she is the dumbest person in the world. I can not bring myself to feel sorry for stupid people. She is just the dumbest dummy.

SLOW. The pacing is so slow it is ridiculous. I get what they are trying to do, I really do see the vision here but it is so poorly executed. Nothing is happening. I feel like maybe the repeating cycles theme would have hit a little harder if we had actually gone in chronological order. The flashbacks are taking away from her current relationship and if we had seen generational cycles repeat a little more clearly the movie might have done a bit better.

God, this movie is so long. And it's so bad, like it isn’t getting better. Now we know that she is an unreliable narrator, but the first time he hits her is so obvious. And again, she got herself into a relationship with someone who showed all his red flags up front.

And then her ex boyfriend sees that Ryle clearly beat the shit out of her and he recognizes the sign because he grew up in a domestic violence household. He even confronts her about it and she still can’t get herself out of it, even after Ryle and Atlas get into it. She is just SO STUPID. I am so very sorry but I can not. If your situation is at all similar to Lily’s, if there were violent red flags that YOU ignored then it is 100% YOUR fault if you get the shit kicked out of you. This is going to be a very strong and unpopular opinion but no, no sympathy for you.

Her wake up call was being raped…at least something did it. It's both extremely tragic and pathetic that that's what it took to snap her out of her stupidity.

Letting him help with the baby stuff? So now you aren't just stupid you're also a bad mom. If he beats the shit out of you he WILL beat the shit out of your kids. Whatever emotional trauma you've got going on you need to get over it and protect your child. He's holding the baby and I am filled with an astounding amount of rage.

Okay guys…this movie is truly terrible. Our leads had no chemistry. The protagonist is insufferable. The pacing is slow, the act structure is nonexistent. And it really does glorify domestic violence and does not do a very good job of raising awareness for warning signs. This movie had an opportunity that it wasted. 0/10, do not recommend, definitely do not watch. It is such a waste of time.
