The comeback of Lindsay Lohan was a hot internet topic on the internet for a while. She came out with a Christmas movie last year and then she was in another Netflix project that was released earlier this year, Irish Wish. As with many child stars spending so long in the spotlight led to a decline of mental health and she was really struggling for a while. Well as someone who thrived on Lindsay Lohan movies when I was younger I was someone who was super excited to see her be healthy and happy again. So I was excited to finally sit down and watch Irish Wish.
Okay so Lohan plays a book editor who is in love with one of her authors, who ends up falling in love and marrying one of her best friends. She travels to Ireland for their wedding and of course falls in love with someone else. So we have the classic romantic comedy setup.
When lamenting over the fact that her friend is marrying the man that she loves, she wishes that she was the one marrying him. Her wish is granted and through this lens she realizes that her friend and her love interest are actually perfectly suited for each other.
Now this movie is a perfect romantic comedy. Lohan is at the top of her game, the story between Paul and Maddy and Maddy and the travel photographer is set up so well. The magical Irish lady that grants Maddy’s wish also influences Maddy and the travel photographer getting together. And I think that the story of someone realizing that what they think they want isn’t always what’s best for them set against a romantic comedy setting is actually really clever.
Obviously at this point the genre is so oversaturated that it's really difficult to come up with something original and fresh. But I think the way that Irish Wish uses traditional rom com tropes as well as giving it some twists makes this film feel new. There isn’t anything about the film that feels overused or super derivative.
They also did something great with the casting though I’m not sure it was intentional. The guy Maddy is pining over is very average and the one we should root for her to end up with is so much more attractive. And I think that there is no possible way that was on purpose but I love it anyway.
Lindsay Lohan looks really beautiful… I am really proud of her. She was such a huge part of my childhood and I’ve seen so many child stars I grew up with just decline so quickly and I love to see her healing.
The proper amount of tension between Maddy and the photographer was there. They have incredible chemistry and they are very easy to root for.
Overall I think the film was a pretty solid 7.5/10. Higher than Netflix normally produces. I think the love story of the main character as well as the other love story the film sets up are both incredibly well set up and executed. There is a great balance of tropes and original thoughts. Fully making the film feel like the genre it's supposed to be without reducing itself solely to tropes and cliches. I love seeing Lindsay Lohan on screen again. This is really where she belongs, she deserves nothing but happiness. I am so happy that she is acting in projects that really seem to be just fun for her. If you are looking for a fun, magical rom com then Irish Wish is definitely worth the watch.
