If you are a binger, then settle in for Dark.

If This, Then That

Break out the truffle popcorn, put your sex life on hold, and get ready to park your as$ in your favorite spot on the couch. ..You know, that one that sags a tad bit in the middle from too much wear and tear, but has just the perfect lounge-to-TV-view ratio.

Ooh yeah, that spot.

Netflix recently released a sci-fi thriller series known as Dark. Set in the small German town of Winden, the story has everything we love wrapped up in one. It’s brimming with the thought provoking, mind bending, weirdly romantic, cheesy drama that we crave. With almost every main character seemingly in an unhealthy relationship, we can’t help but fall in love with this guilty pleasure.

If you like a twist, then Dark will definitely satisfy your dramatic cravings.

However, what sets the foreign series apart from the countless other telenovela-esk shows - with their dashing love stories and divine affairs- is the combination of two thematic choices: mindful cinematography, and mythical symbolism. Making Dark an entirely new entity in tv history.

Staying true to its character, the entire series is tied together by the oldest known love story in history, that of Adam and Eve. Although the creators don’t explicitly allude to this story until the later seasons, the earlier episodes are jam packed with vivid imagery, symbolism, lighting, and precise cinematography that alludes to the infamous couple. The references keep us on our toes, and, if you can catch these literary cues, you connect to the show on a more intellectual level.

Like we said, the show is not just another Grey’s Anatomy.

Nonetheless, if you don’t happen to catch these cues, the show is still a trip in itself. Dark is also profoundly based on time travel. Set in 33 year intervals, the main characters find themselves trapped in an endless loop of apocalyptic tragedy. Each character trying desperately to save those they truly love.

Yes, so the drama not only crosses over the different character arcs, but intertwines into multiple time periods and dimensions. Proving the only real thing that is limitless in time and space, is love.

Of course, the show’s delicate balance between intelligent referencing of biblical tales, and mind numbing drama is set right by the two main characters, Jonas and Martha. Their love story turning out to be a slightly awkward and accidental case of incest when they find out that Martha and Jonas are technically related. Martha being Jonas’ aunt because Martha’s younger brother who got stuck in the past is actually Jonas’ father.

Yeah, terrible luck for them considering the small town of Winden doesn’t seem to have many romantic options. Yet, their story is so nonchalantly slipped into one of the earlier episodes that by the later seasons their love story seems kind of desirable.

Now, we all immediately think of Game of Thrones, right? Cersei and Jamie Lannister, one of our favorite family tragedies; but, Jonah and Martha’s love story is far more endearing, not as X rated, and a bit less creepy. Plus the ending of Dark is far better than Game of Thrones.. no offense.

As the series is coming to a close, we find ourselves wondering that famous question, “how the --- are they going to end this?” Well, without revealing any spoilers, we can say that the series leaves us satisfied, a bit teary eyed, and questioning our current state of reality.

...it might also leave you considering crawling through a sketchy cave. Just to see if it leads to a wormhole.

Despite the fact that Dark will leave you dreaming of Jonas’ perfect jawline, and Martha’s adorable haircut, the series is so much more than just another love story.
