If I’m Not a Fan, Why Watch the Janet Jackson Documentary???

Because, It’s A Family Requirement (I Think, Kinda)

…and no, Majique MiMi is not a secret member of the Jackson family 🙄.

The family requirements were established by members of my extended family after a brief meeting.

Unsure of how the tradition and good -natured ribbing began but after any holiday gathering, the generation Xers and below would retreat to the back room and music videos would then be played and simultaneously discussed with the younger generations who say things like…

“I think Chris Brown is a better musician than Prince.” 🤯

I would immediately look at my best friend’s husband to see if he used one of his little cousins that I haven’t met as a set up just to see my complexion go completely grey and hear a squeal emanate from the back of my throat from trying not to drop the kinda profanity I want to drop as a response to that blasphemous statement.

It is a Christian home after all and there are minor children present, but my shock and angst are real.

That was just an example of the many musical conversations my family has had over the years.

As I am typing, I stopped to look up a Facebook post about one of our discussions regarding the New Edition Movie/ Documentary that we all watched separately but discussed together.

Apparently instructions were given that from January 24-26 we were all investigating the findings of said documentary for further insight on the rise and fall of the economic structure within NE.

Some of those findings include but are not limited to:

*Michael Bivens not being able to sing and play basketball at the same time.

*Wood Harris in a wig bears a striking resemblance to Eriq La Salle circa coming to America.

*The whole neighborhood comes together in the struggle for a perm or press and curl.

The problem with these notes is that they were from five years ago, and if y’all don’t know bout my memory issues by now, y’all haven’t been reading my blog, and shame on y’all, for real.

Anyhow, anywho…

These are the types of shenanigans that transpire at our family gatherings. So, when the subject of Prince/Michael Jackson/Jackson Family came up and I, ever so nonchalantly asked…

“Am I the only one who doesn’t think Janet Jackson can sing?”

Sugar Honey Iced Tea if all of the light complexioned males didn’t collectively gasp there-by sucking all of the air out of the room leaving me to claw frantically at my throat while mouthing “I’m sorry” over and over again.

Good God, y’all my bad.!!! 😱

When I was able to breathe normally again, I relented and said,

“Janet Jackson is a supreme talent. I love the way she pays the finger cymbals. 🙄.”

So of course, when upon watching A&E, and the commercial for the Janet Jackson documentary came on, what did I do???

You guessed it, I texted my best friend and discussed a family watch party.

The problem is we, technically, all live in different states.

And it’s a two -evening documentary, I’m assuming from 8-9pm because do we honestly think Janet is gonna talk for an hour two days in a row???

No, what’s gonna happen is they’re gonna show previously unreleased concert & family footage, throw Jimmy Jam in there for commentary while the cameraman gets gorgeous photo ops of Janet who giggles and cusses for shock value. 🤷🏻

And PAUSE right quick, does anyone else think in the commercial that Mariah Carey looks like she was forced to be there? 😂

My bad, maybe it was a poor editing job, but she looked unhappy.

Just like me and my family’s old asses are gonna be if we tryna force ourselves to stay awake to watch Janet Jackson…

But, I’ll probably do it just so I can talk to y’all!!!

Till then 💜 ✌️
