'I'm Not Okay With This' Spoiler Free Review
I'm okay with this show

So before I even start let me say I haven't read the novel and I will be looking at if this show works in its own environment and not with any source material backing it.
So this is a short letter to screenwriters at Netflix. Yes people enjoy seeing more oddball characters because they at times can be way more relatable and fun to watch than 2-D basic character archetypes. That said though when literally every single new show you make focuses on the stand out high school kid with only two or three friends that can end up becoming just as boring as the same character tropes and archetypes we have been seeing since ancient theatrics. Also if this is the lane you wanna take your character do it cool, but do it because you want to and it's right for the story not because you want to come across as relatable, that's dumb. If you're wondering why I say that's dumb here's why, if the point of the character your writing is to be relatable to your audience chances are they cant be a outcast in the show AND be relatable because they'll just end being a unrealistic portrayal of whatever you came up with.

Now I said all that because for the first few episodes I thought this what our main character Syd was gonna be. But eventually she formed into a decent on screen character as the show went on. Her best friend named Dina who in my opinion is a really nice take on a "popular" high school kid. She pushes Syd out of her comfort zone a good bit but never so much that it's not pleasant to see on screen. Then we have Stan who is just a guy who's really into Syd and finds himself caught up in all her shenanigans simply because he's super into her. You have your generic cool guy athlete in Brad who’s…..I mean that's pretty much there is to him, and finally Syd’s mother and brother who honestly I really enjoyed I almost think a little too much. They have a good balance of bringing their own dramatics in but still feeling like a somewhat normal family given the situation at hand which was kind of nice to see.

So when the show opens it's in media res with Syd running covered in blood. That alone gave me insanely more tense vibes than the actual first episode so I went "it's only the first episode" and kept watching and waiting for the tone shift and it literally doesn't come until the last 5 minutes of the last episode which I really don't know how to feel about that. Part of me wanted to be upset that I didn't get much of what I was originally looking for in the show but another part of me was convinced it wasn’t that big a deal because what I was seeing wasn't all that bad. Depending on what you're looking for the show can really drag its feet. If you're fine with teenage drama then you'll be fine but, if you were more invested in why a teenage girl was sprinting down the street covered in blood and the more supernatural aspect of the show you may be a little disappointed.

So in conclusion is the show bad? No. In fact I think it has a lot of potential but hopefully in the next season (assuming Netflix renews it) it doubles down and the whole power fantasy aspect of the show and less on the teen drama that I can get literally anywhere on Netflix these days. I’d say the show is walking on this line of being an average show with glimmers of greatness peaking out here and there.
