Endicott College Mainstage 'Shrek' Was Terrific!
Endicott College Mainstage performed a terrific showcase of 'Shrek: The Musical.'

Have you ever found yourself walking through the woods and you come across an ogre arguing with a talking donkey, a princess singing so loudly that it makes a bird explode, and countless fairy tale beings dancing their heart out? Yeah, I was definitely at Endicott College.
Endicott College Mainstage performed a terrific showcase of Shrek: The Musical."Based on the popular DreamWorks 2001 animated feature, Shrek, an ogre, is sent on a quest on short notice by Lord Farquaad to rescue Princess Fiona. While on this crazy journey he meets a talking donkey, defeats a dragon, and discovers the important meaning of friendship and true love. In this comedic and heartwarming tale, everyone learns to embrace their differences to the fullest.
From start to finish the cast of Shrek was high in energy. The show was truly magical and entertaining. I immediately fell in love with all the characters, the dazzling costumes, and even the beautiful scenery.
Michael Varno, ‘20, stepped out on stage, immediately singing in full volume as the grizzly green Shrek, and danced about the stage. He was an absolute delight to watch. His Scottish accent and expressive energy brought out his sarcastic character and an important message to all.
Tagging along on the journey, Ryan Sifuentes, ‘19, was dressed in a full wool donkey costume, eagerly jumping about, pleading for Shrek’s acceptance. He too had a delectable personality making all audiences laugh. Definitely a show stopper!
Paige Vigneron, ‘19, did an outstanding job as Fiona, a princess hiding a secret. Vigneron knew how to sell comedy, through her expressive voice. Does a princess truly have to live her life by the book or can she make her life into what she desires?
It was very creative how different actresses portrayed Fiona, as her child and teen counterpart. They knew today would be awesome, seeing how the audience gave them a handful of applause. I have to commemorate seventh grader, Massima Iacobucci, for her extraordinary vocal talents as Young Fiona.
Shrek has a number of creative technical elements from lighting, crafty sound effects, Pinocchio’s growing nose, and even a hand-made dragon, with a few actors helping her fly. I have to applaud Jamie Budge, ‘21, for her powerful singing voice. You’re definitely going to want to stay.
Lord Farquaad is a ruler, but he isn’t in the highest standards. You can create a big impact on how you showcase yourself. Stephen Hoadley, ‘20, proudly danced on his knees, as he made his grand entrance as the dwarf ruler of Duloc. He was a delight to watch, from his maniacal laughter and creativity.
Songs were upbeat and energetic. l even danced in my seat (my trademark). My favorite of all songs was ‘Freak Flag’ sung by various fairy tale characters from Pinocchio, Peter Pan, The Ugly Duckling, and many other notable characters. The song holds a beautiful and powerful message about our true inner voices. We’re all different. Similar is boring.
As director Katie Clarke explains, “Special is what makes us strong.” I can’t think of a better way to put it. Don’t judge anyone before getting to know them. You have no idea what inner battles anyone is fighting. Shrek is a positive message to all, about the world of fairy tales. It’s time we changed the expected fairytale tropes and proudly live our differences.
Congratulations to director Katie Clarke, cast and crew for presenting an amazing performance. I could tell that the cast was having fun. Art is a beautiful form of expression and releasing our true inner selves. The theatre is all about taking a risk. The cast of Shrek made a huge impact. You just have to believe.
Endicott College Mainstage production of Shrek was a powerful, energetic, and fun rendition. The cast and crew did a splendid job from start to finish. If you have time I would suggest that you catch a showing from April fifth to seventh, before the fairy tales buy them all. You don’t want to miss out on this glorious tale.
