There has been a rise in lesbian media this year and I love it alot. Among those titles is Drive Away Dolls. I am very behind in my movie watching for the year but I am doing my best to catch up. Everything I know about this movie screams “campy as hell” and I really hope that I’m right because that’s what I’m here for. So here we go with my latest, super late movie review.
Pedro Pascal is killed in like the first 5 minutes of the movie, so that's interesting.
Right off the bat I really love that these characters are not one dimensional stereotypes of lesbians. Every single one of these women are different and they are depictions of women with lesbian experiences but they aren’t just lesbians. I love that So yay for representation.
I am already in love with these girls. The humor of this movie is incredible. Our two main characters could not be more opposite. Jamie is the sexy, slutty, southern girl and Marian is the intelligent, semi-uptight cultured one. They play off of each other so well and their dynamic offers so much room for character growth.
This is also unequivocally a character driven story. The girls don’t even find the goods in the car that they stole until 40 minutes into the movie. It is mostly about these two friends finding themselves and each other. And they both get lots of growth. Jamie starts to be more cautious, understanding and self aware. Whereas Marian starts to be a little louder and more adventurous. They end up being really good for each other.
I also love that they don’t tell us what is in the case. We see the severed head but the audience doesn’t get shown the case when the girls open it. We can assume that it's money but it's never actually shown to us. That is great storytelling right there.
Also the indeterminate ages. I mean these women live on their own and they have big girl jobs but we don’t actually know how old they are. I think this gives a universality to the story and to the characters that most movies don’t have.
The fact that this has evolved from a best friend road trip to a situation where best friends are trying to help each other find some release is amazing. I have a feeling that after they sleep together it is going to evolve again into them actually falling for each other and I couldn’t be happier about it. God this movie is so gay and it's amazing. We need more lesbian movies, I personally need some bisexual movies. But really just keep the gay media coming.
Marian having these memories of her childhood and her gay awakening is actually so important. So many of us did not know what was happening to us when it did and for some of us it took years to realize what our sexuality was. Showing a little girl have this awakening of not just sexuality but spirituality is super incredible.
Drive Away Dolls might be one of the best movies of the year. But it won’t get the award recognition that it deserves because it's a lesbian buddy comedy. But it is funny, smart, entertaining and it has some truly incredible performances. It is in fact campy as hell which is exactly what it needed to be. You know that it takes a lot for me to give out a perfect score so I am going to give it an 8/10. It's a great movie but perfect pieces of media are extremely rare and I don’t give very many things that distinction. However it is very rewatchable and it's a great time.
