Drifting Home

Netflix Original Anime Movie Review

By animetipzPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Recently I have been getting interested in anime movies. I have noticed more anime movies coming out that aren't connected to a series. Growing up I loved watching Studio Ghibli and contribute a lot of my anime addiction to those movies.

But I would hardly watch anime movies unless they were connected to a series I was watching.

This year however I have found a new love for anime movies. Netflix especially surprised me with some amazing original movies. I have been seeing Drifting Home around a lot. There are many different opinions, I heard people who thought it was incredible and people who thought it was stupid. Well on a rainy day with not much to do I decided to give it a watch and get my own opinions about the movie.

Storyline: Kosuke and Natsume have been friends since childhood, but as time goes on the relationship between the two sixth graders seems strained as they keep avoiding one another. One day during their summer vacation, they go to a housing complex that is scheduled to be demolished. Having grown up there, the place holds a lot of memories, but while playing, they suddenly get caught up in a mysterious phenomenon and when they regain consciousness, they see an entire ocean before them as the housing complex has drifted into a mysterious sea and Kosuke and Natsume with it. Will they be able to return to their previous world? A summer farewell journey begins.

The movie starts by introducing the apartment building. Other than people thinking it's haunted we know nothing about it and the memories that are living in the walls. The story wastes no time introducing the characters and their conflicts with each other.

After a conflict with the character arises a storm hits. The characters are transported to the middle of the ocean but on their old apartment building. I am not sure how I would react if I was in middle school and now stranded in the middle of the ocean, but they are so creative and resourceful as they try to figure out how to get home.

In this magical land, we see characters working through their emotions together and processing grief, and letting go of a part of their childhood. This movie does have a lot of emotions in it but to me wasn't very emotional. There was a lot of opportunity for a tear-jerking movie but it missed the mark.

Without spoiling too much of what they find out in the ocean. I will give this movie huge props for creativity. I have felt there have been too many copy-and-paste stories coming from anime as of late. One of the biggest reasons I love anime is that creators have no limits on what they can do, you completely emerge in their world. In this case, floating buildings on the ocean with spirits and magic. I loved this idea got transformed into a movie.

The characters were well-written and weren't annoying for being so young. This is a movie about character development and each character grows through the obstacles they are presented with. Even the annoying bully gets her opportunity to shine and grow as a character.

There is a lot of suspense as well. I was surprised by how many scenes caught me off guard. My eyes were glued to the screen wondering how everything was going to work itself out. Even though the characters are in a magical land they are facing very real problems. They need to find food so they don't starve, They get hurt by buildings falling apart, and storms that slowly start to sink their apartment. With all of this, they still manage to add some comedy and light-hearted scenes of kids basically having a huge sleepover.

My Review: I was shocked at how entertaining Drifting Home was. It was 2 hours of jammed-pack adventure and character development. I am not the biggest fan of anime with a lot of young characters because they can be extremely annoying. I was pleasantly surprised by these characters and the depth they have for being so young. This is a very creative and magical world, with a great story. In my opinion, this was a great film that had some great twists. I am shocked at how well Netflix Original films have been doing with anime films. If you need to be teleported to another world I would recommend watching Driting Home.
