Doctor Who: Burning Questions After The Reality War

There's a few hanging threads left for the show's future

By Christopher HalesPublished 8 months ago 5 min read

The most recent season of Doctor Who has come to an end with The Reality War and it tied up the main story of the last eight episodes. However, with the next season not commissioned yet and some unresolved mysteries, especially after those final few moments, there are some big questions that we have for the future.

So, let's recap them one by one.

Who is "The Boss"?

© BBC

Since the beginning of Russell T. Davies' second bout as showrunner, we've had a lingering mystery around a mysterious boss who seems to have an interest in two-hearted beings.

The Meep mentioned them in the 60th anniversary's The Star Beast. Jump forward to the following season and Rogue made a point of mentioning his new boss. Then skipping ahead to the most recent finale had The Doctor's friend, Anita, mentioning her boss sending their regards.

It was expected that this would be a mystery for our current Doctor's tenure as the iconic Time Lord, alas, incase you don't know...SPOILER...Ncuti Gatwa has exited Doctor Who in a shock regeneration.

So it looks like by the time this is tied up, it will have been a mystery that has spanned over three or maybe even four Doctors.

So the question is, who is this mysterious individual still waiting in the wings to reveal themselves? The Master? Rassilon? Captain Jack turned evil? A completely new character? Only time will tell.

Where Did Mrs Flood/The Rani go?

The Reality War saw The Rani's masterplan come to fruition with Omega being released from the underverse. Although their triumpth was shortlived with the creator of the Time Lords devouring the bi-generated Rani moments after his release.

This prompted the Mrs Flood version of the character to make a quick getaway to make sure she wasn't dessert. The question then is where did The Rani go? There's no reason for why we can't see her again in the near future. After all, The Master to re-introduced to the show in 2008 and we've seen a fair bit of him/her ever since. Surely The Rani will get the same treatment now that she's officially back.

We can also maybe hope for some sort of return from the bi-generated Rani. With a class act like that, surely that isn't the last we've seen of her.

When Will Susan Return?

© BBC

It was during last year's The Devil's Chord that Susan, The Doctor's grandaughter, was mentioned by the Time Lord prominently for the first time in a while. The Doctor then thought that she was Susan Twist before the reveal of her in fact being Sutekh in last year's two-part finale. He then even alluded to his mistake of not returning to see her, saying one day maybe he will.

But it was during this year's Interstellar Song Contest that Susan appeared to her grandfather in a series of visions asking him to come and find her. With an actual return from actress Carole Ann Ford, who has played the character since Doctor Who's very first episode, you would have expected Susan to actually come face to face with her grandfather before this season's end. But, this hasn't been the case.

Much like the "Boss" mystery, this feels like a mystery that would have started and ended in Gatwa's tenure, but his sudden departure has shook things up a bit. So now it looks like Susan's reunion with The Doctor will be with another incarnation.

The question is, where is she? She seemed to be in the Fifteenth Doctor's Tardis during those visions. And why is she reaching out? Is she in danger? Could she sense her grandfather's impending death in space? What has triggered her to make a sudden reappearance?

Will We See Ruby and Belinda Again?

© BBC

When The Doctor flies off and leaves his companions behind, it usually means he'll see them again before that Doctor departs. However, it wasn't long after Doctor Fifteen left Belinda that he changed into a familiar face. So, will we actually be seeing Ruby and Belinda again?

The Doctor did say he may see Bel again even with a different face. And with Russell T. Davies still at the helm, it does stand to reason that another Doctor can still revisit these previous companions. It just begs the questions, why and how? What is going to bring our new Doctor back to these guys?

With any other regeneration, The Doctor tends to leave their previous companions in their past, unless they're present for their change. But, there is a feeling that things aren't done with Ruby and Belinda, moreso the former. Something just doesn't feel done with Ruby's story yet.

What About The Doctor and Rogue's Romance?

© BBC

Jonathan Groff's Rogue will be remembered for almost banishing The Doctor then falling in love with him all in the space of an evening before he sacrificed himself to save Ruby by sending himself to a random dimension. But we did then get that sudden appearance of him to "John Smith" warning him about Conrad Clark's wish world.

Now, one would have imagined that Rogue would have physically returned and finally shared another kiss with Ncuti's Doctor before his time in the Tardis was up. But again, this is another thing that points to things not wrapping up properly thanks to Gatwa's exit.

So what is burning us up now is what happens when Rogue does re-appear. Surely he can't just be left in a hellish dimension and that's it. How does he escape? Does The Doctor rescue him? What would give the The Doctor the sudden urge to do so if that is the case? Also, given we're getting a new Doctor, how is the relationship going to look if the new Doctor's sexuality doesn't line up with Rogue's anymore? It does make for an interesting turn of events to be fair, but it all just seems to have been left suddenly.

What Does That SHOCK Regeneration Mean?

© BBC

Now to the main burning question. What the HECK is going to happen now that The Doctor has taken the form of Rose Tyler, companion from 2005 to 2006?!

The final moments of The Reality War saw Gatwa's Doctor regenerate and we had Billie Piper greeting us with a joyous "oh, hello!". So, what's next with that?

Well, we do have pretty solid theories for how this has come about both behind the scenes of the show and from an actual story perspective. But we won't repeat that here. Click HERE and you'll get a full recap of this event and what we think is next and why. But ultimately, what does this mean for the show's future and what is really going on? We'll hopefully find out by at least 2027.

The mystery of "The Boss" sounds intriguing. Could it be someone we've never even considered? And what about Mrs Flood/The Rani? It's crazy how these storylines can span multiple Doctors. Wonder if we'll get answers soon.
