Doctor Strange vs Scarlet Witch

Definitive Analysis

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

This is a well known debate and though the obvious, common sense answer to any hero vs hero debate is it depends; it depends on the writer and what the intent of the story is. However we can hypothesize based on comic book feats, powers and weaknesses, and biggest wins over overpowered opponents. Using this type of analysis the answer to who would win Doctor Strange or Scarlet Witch is a loud, resounding Scarlet Witch.

Point #1: Doctor Strange is extremely susceptible to mind control and possession.

In Volume 3 of the New Avengers Doctor Strange is possessed by a demon just after regaining his title of sorcerer supreme, resulting in him acting as the right hand man for Doctor Doom. To this point Wanda could so very easily mind control him with literally no effort whatsoever on her end.

Point #2: Too much of Doctor Strange’s “power” comes from external sources and not from himself.

First up one of the powers listed for Doctor Strange is the ability to utilize ancient artifacts which truth be told is not that impressive being that the other hero in question, Scarlet Witch, also wielded an ancient artifact using it to defeat Dormammu in 1976 long before the expansion of her power. Which means even at Scarlet Witch’s weakest state she can do the same thing. Also the cliffhanger of a 1980s series ended with the Sanctum Sanctorum being destroyed, ridding Strange of most of his mystic books and artifacts and that alone weakened him.

Second of all Strange’s power comes from the Vishanti and when he refused to fight in a war for them, they stopped bestowing him with magic which in turn left him basically useless (Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme Issue #48-49). Though he starts studying Chaos magic from various other witches and wizards (Scarlet Witch being one of them I might add) when the fundamental rules of magic are changed he is weakened because he no longer has access to his old spells (Eye of Doom, Secret Wars #3).

Point #3: Just a simple glance at a list of each of their powers leaves Doctor Strange vastly outmatched.

Doctor Strange; Martial Arts, Proficiency in use of weapons, Highly intelligent, Wielding ancient artifacts, Vishanti provided magic

Scarlet Witch; Wielding ancient artifacts, Resurrection and life manipulation, (the resurrection of Wonderman, Avengers Vol 3, issue #10 1998. The resurrection of Quicksilver, House of M issues #7-8, and the magic creation of her children, The Vision and Scarlet Witch 1985.) Reality warping, Teleportation, Time and Matter manipulation, Energy projection, manipulation and absorption.

Scarlet Witch is the only thing the Phoenix Five is afraid of, ya know one of the most powerful and immortal entities in the Marvel Universe (A vs X issue #12).

Point #4: Feat for feat, Wanda’s comic book presence is objectively more impressive.

I could go on for another 1000 words on this point but literally all I am going to say is that Doctor Strange’s power combined with Professor X and Emma Frost could not contain, or stop, or control Wanda’s powers and them trying is what led to House of M, “No More Mutants”. Actually that 1 event is really all I need in this debate, but those who claim to read comic books but don’t actually read comic books seem to need a bit more.

Also don’t even get me started on the fact that the general gatekeeping public only thinks Doctor Strange would win in a fight due to the very sexist handling of Wanda’s character but in conclusion it's not even the least bit close. Scarlet Witch would absolutely destroy Doctor Strange if it came to a fight to the death.
