Den of Thieves 2: Pantera Review

Well, dear reader, let me tell you a story about a film called Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. It’s a tale of thieves, diamonds, and shadowy gangs, featuring the return of Gerard Butler, that man who resembles a moving boulder with a perpetually angry face. This time, we find "Big Nick" roaming the streets of Paris and Barcelona, trying to catch "Donnie," who has become entangled in the world of diamond thieves and the infamous "Panther Mafia." The goal? To pull off the heist of the century at the world’s largest diamond exchange!

Now, before we dive into the details of this sequel, let me tell you something about the first film. It was a surprisingly enjoyable affair, though it bore such a striking resemblance to Heat that I half-wondered if the director had accidentally copied it. Still, it was a well-made movie, packed with action and thrills. And with Gerard Butler’s ability to draw crowds to the theaters, I wasn’t shocked when they announced a sequel.

Last January, Butler gave us Plane, which was a pleasant surprise. And this year, he’s back with Den of Thieves 2, a solid addition to the January lineup. It seems Butler is becoming the "King of January," much like Liam Neeson before him, who used to drop films like Taken and Non-Stop during this chilly month.

The film revolves around Butler’s character, a role that seems tailor-made for him. He’s that tough, unshakable guy who appears to know every trick in the thief’s playbook. The chemistry between him and O’Shea Jackson Jr., who returns from the first film, adds a nice touch to the story. This time, we see the two characters teaming up to pull off the heist, which is an interesting twist.

But let me warn you: the trailers for this movie heavily emphasized the action, but the film itself leans more toward a classic heist narrative. If you’re expecting a bullet-riddled, explosion-filled spectacle like John Wick, you might be disappointed. This is a movie about planning, waiting, and characters trying to achieve the impossible.

The film excels in creating a tense atmosphere, relying on handheld camera work to give it a sense of realism. There are small details, like security guards or random people on the streets, that add to the tension. The movie also uses various locations to give a sense of travel, somewhat reminiscent of a James Bond film, albeit on a smaller budget.

The heist itself is thrilling, but the film suffers from its excessive length. Yes, two hours and twenty-four minutes of planning and waiting. There are moments when you might feel bored, especially if you’re expecting something more action-packed. There are also a few questionable moments, like characters appearing in unlikely places without explanation.

What makes the film enjoyable, though, is the chemistry between the lead characters. There’s a standout scene between Butler and Jackson outside a diner in the middle of the night, where they engage in a lengthy conversation about their pasts. This kind of scene is rare these days, when everything has to be fast-paced and adrenaline-fueled.

In the end, Den of Thieves 2 isn’t the greatest heist movie ever made, but it’s a decently entertaining one. If you’re a fan of classic heist films, you might enjoy it. But if you’re looking for something more explosive, you might find it a bit dull.

Finally, I send my thoughts and prayers to those affected by the wildfires in California. The situation there is dire, and I hope it’s brought under control soon. If you’ve seen the film, let me know what you think. And if you haven’t, are you ready for a European adventure with Gerard Butler?

A Final Note:

This film is like an old campfire story. It’s not the best, but it entertains you for a while. If you’re looking for something deeper, you might want to search elsewhere. But if you’re up for spending two and a half hours in the world of thieves and diamonds, this film might just be an okay choice.

Now, dear reader, if you’ve seen the film, tell me what you think. And if you haven’t, are you ready for a European adventure with Gerard Butler?
