James Gunn’s Creature Commandos was off to a rough start. I think it started really slow and the story still seems a little confused. That said it is his first project in his DCU so I have to give him some time to get going. We really are just getting started and I have heard some really amazing things about the end of the show. Gunn is still the only person I trust with the future of DC especially after seeing the Superman trailer. I do love some of the characters he chose to use for Creature Commandos so let’s get to the second half of the season.
The Bride is easily my favorite character, I love that she is getting so much attention. Frankenstein’s monster coming after her forever is a great storyline. Him always tracking her down and her always kicking his ass and running away is the best.
I'm pre-tired of Amanda Waller storylines. I know I said this in the first part of this show but she has been so omniscient in the comics lately that I both understand why she is being used in the adaptations and also hate it. She isn’t interesting enough to be the center of this much focus.
Weasel starts to get more shape in the fourth episode, he clearly didn;t kill the kids, he liked them. But he can’t talk so he was an easy target.
Circe shows Waller a future where princess ends up taking over the world and by that we mean the United States, and killing the entire Justice League. Rick has a hard time with this information because he fucked the princess and now he loves her.
Flag and Frankenstien start working together and it is by far the funniest team up so far. Frankenstein has the funniest dialogue. David Harbour was an amazing casting choice.
Can we make a pact to cast Alan Tudyk in whatever he wants all the time? I love that man, he is an INCREDIBLE actor and voice actor and he has just all of the skills. He needs to be in more things.
Rick tips off the princess which puts all of the commandos in the crosshairs of the palace guards. But this is such a killer fight scene and running it alongside Frankenstien and Flag fighting Clayface was such a fun decision. If there is one thing that James Gunn has a specific skill for it is setting incredible fight scenes to super good music.
Nina is the cutest and if anything happens to her I am going to have words with James Gunn. I love her and I would die for her, thanks. Her backstory was the one I felt the most connected to and the saddest because of. Her father is the one that turned her into a little fish and it happened when she was so small. Poor baby.
So Nina was captured and jailed for no reason and her father was shot and killed in front of her for no reason. That sounds about right.
NOOOOO. JAMES GUNN WHAT THE FUCK. You killed my Nina and now we have a fucking problem. We have personal beef now sir. I will be your biggest problem from now until forever.
I also love the Bride, she sees right through the princesses bullshit. We seem to be working through all of my favorite Commandos though. This was starting to look like a show where none of these monsters are going to survive. Though The Bride does manage to kill the princess first and I love that for her.
Overall it ended up being a great show. It definitely took a couple of episodes to find its footing. But once it did it was brilliant and managed to be pretty emotionally devastating at the same time. Which as we know makes for the best television. I will never not be upset about Nina and now I have personal problems with James Gunn but the way that all the backstories were delivered was great. I love that it wasn’t all done up top and that we got to grow closer to the monsters as the story was unfolding. 8/10, super excited to see what else he has in store for us.
