Cosmic Princess Kaguya!

Review

I have decided that this is going to be the year I branch out more. I am going to watch more anime, more foreign language films, and I am going to rewatch less. With that, I decided to start my movie reviewing this year with Netflix's newest anime addition.

I love how this dhooting star makes land fall and something magical happens right in front of the girl and she’s like “nah”. She keeps closing the little portal to stop the music, “Sorry but I’m kind of maxed out with life stuff at the moment”...I feel that.

Oh the baby is magic, which I guess we knew but the baby grows fast. Oh she’s from a story that’s super cute.

I love the dialogue, these teenage girls are absolutely written like teenage girls. I love the way the music is used diagetically.

The actual story behind this is really great. Taking care of Kaguya is forcing her to either become her mother or break the cycle. Her relationship with her mom is exactly why she lives on her own, so does she really want that for someone else?

Sorry I am becoming too engrossed in the film to type as I watch. These two are super sweet and I love how much Kaguya is throwing herself into this AI VR, which is a weird sentence but here we are. Iroha is burnt out, my girl has been working around the clock. School, job, and then helping Kaguya with her streaming.

There is really something about these anime movies attacking me. I too work myself into the ground and need to be occasionally forced to chill out.

Iroha completely disguising herself when she plays with Kaguya is really interesting because she already had an in-game look, one that she changed because she really doesn’t want the spotlight on her. Attention is not this girl’s thing; she just wants to survive and enjoy her little game. She doesn’t even want her real name said in the game.

OH SHIT! That was a great twist and I loved it. The Black Onyx dude is Iroha’s older brother. The sibling that stayed adds a very interesting dynamic. But quite frankly tracks. The momma’s boy who had no problem staying because he was obviously treated better. And the younger sister who was being treated like crap, it got worse after her dad died, and brother moved out so she chose to leave. But he's still clearly in contact with mom where Iroha is not.

Yeah we knew they were gonna win the big event, first of all there are always ways to rig these things and it's clear who the Idol wanted to win. And then we have the fact that it's simply easier to start from 0 followers then from millions. Because the contest was who could gain the most followers in a certain period of time.

Yachiyo is not who they think she is. There is going to be another twist here. I just don’t know what it is. I thought at first it was going to be that she is mom, trying to reconnect with her daughter. But now I don’t know. Because the story has seemed to fully move past the fact that Kaguya did in fact come out of nowhere.

We really bring this whole idea that Kaguya is from the moon thing back in at the end of the third act. I don’t mind that. I like that they really established her as a real girl with feelings, hopes and relationships. They got us attached to her and Iroha’s friendship before bringing the storybook thing full circle. It was really well structured actually.

Alright guys I fucking loved it. 10/10 seriously. It was fun, cute, and sweet. But it was also really well written and really heartfelt. Iroha’s relationship with Kaguya also gave her back her relationship with her brother, strengthened her relationship with her other friends, and gave her confidence in her skills. I really loved this movie.
