Companion was one of the many Valentine's day horror movies that came out this year, (seriously there were like 1000 of them). This is one of the only ones that actually looked decent. It seems to take some inspiration from Stepford Wives, at least aesthetically, so I already kind of love it. And it stars Jack Quaid, who we love.
Iris and Josh go for a woody getaway with Josh’s friends. They all seem a little weird around her, so clearly they all know what’s going on. And this is going to be a And Then There Were None situation.
This girl is super irritating. Sergey is the weird man’s whose house they are at and she is his “accessory”. All of this dialogue points so heavily to this whole group, including Iris knowing that she was built. Like she was created for Josh. Now we know that is the premise of the movie so it feels a little heavy handed.
Jack Quaid is so adorable. He could be in literally any movie and I would watch it. He is also the kind of charismatic that allows him to pull off playing complete assholes. Cause you can’t completely hate any character he plays.
The film does a great job of letting us know that Iris isn’t a real person. From the ebay that all of her dialogue seems to revolve around Josh’s needs to the way that she walks, it is very clear that she isn’t human.
I knew it, Sergey was Iris’s first kill. She stabbed him right in the neck, that was pretty awesome. And Josh has to shut her down to basically reboot her. The guys tie her to a chair and discuss next steps. And she is apparently from somewhere. Josh got her from a company who dropped her off in a big metal coffin. So this is what pathetic men do when they can’t get actual women to sleep with them? That’s about right.
Sex robot gains sentience and kills the dumbass that ordered her and his friends had to be a hell of a pitch. Also the fact that Josh’s friends all know that she is a robot seems super weird to me. He’s so open about being pathetic…that’s certainly a choice. Apparently this was a whole plan. Josh and Cat planned on killing Sergey using Josh’s robot girlfriend as the fall guy. And this friend group is fully into robot fucking. Eli’s boyfriend Patrick is also a robot.
This friend group is chasing her through the woods and she ends up killing Eli. Josh then sends Patrick after her after bumping his aggression up to 100. Josh is so pathetic. He just is incapable of taking responsibility for his actions and he responds so emotionally.
Patrick is the one responsible for killing Cat, and he helps Josh clean up all of the murders. And then he has Iris kill herself. The next thing we see he is lying his ass off to the Empathix people.
I don’t know the story seems a little all over the place. It was paced pretty well and I think the basic story was a good idea but it's execution left a little to be desired. If you are going to do a sentient robot story then it should really be about the dangers of humans tapping into advanced robotics and AI. But this doesn’t seem to have a theme or message to it. I mean the fact that Josh dies and Iris lives seems to point to a vague, be careful who you take advantage of thing but there was no clearly articulated anything. The film knows it has nothing to say as well because they have Iris narrating at the beginning and the end of the movie. Narration like this is only used in films that know they have nothing to say.
