Can't find a movie to watch? Let me help you

Weekly film recommendations for the average viewer

If you're anything like me, you like to watch movies. However, you're tired of watching movies and tv shows that are contrived and just plain boring. You want that same level of excitment in a movie you would get when you went to the a theatre as a kid. There is that feeling you get when you watch a movie that makes you pause. Not literally pause the movie but rather pause your way of thinking. This pausing usually results in a slurry of complex emotions. You can either be enchanted or disgusted by the thoughts that manifest. If this is a feeling you desire and think you have been missing because of simply generic content, I'm here to help!

Every week I will provide you 5 movies that I think are worth watching. Now sometimes these won't always be movies. They can be docu-series, mini series, TV shows but for the most part I'll try to stick with movies.

1. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) Netflix

If you're in the mood of a comedy this is the one to watch. Its stupid, and almost juvenile but that's what makes it work. The comedy isn't based entirely on dialogue, something modern comedy movies rely way too much on. It's really the characters of this movie that give it the charm it needs. The main character, who is an incompetent detective, must find a way to prevent the assassination of Queen Elizabeth the II. When I first watched this movie I couldnt help but tighten my stomach and stop laughing at the visual gags. Its contagious and a fun movie to watch with friends and family.

2. The Social Dilemma (2020) Netflix

This is a documentary I think everyone should watch. It does a good job to conveying the nature of how our online data is used and manipulated by tech companies. If you are politically confused and disinterested in the way American politics has been lately, this movie gives you a new perspective on why that might be the case. When I watched it my attitude towards using my phone has changed. I'm not saying the movie will make you hate technology but it will make you understand its circumstantial influence and why limiting your use can benefit not only you but others as well.

3. We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) Amazon Prime & Tubi(free)

Now this is a movie unlike any other. Its tone and overall mood can feel slow at first but once you get invested into the characters the story starts to unravel and you are hooked. The great thing about this movie besides the acting and direction is the question it poses to the audience. Who's at fault? The movie is primarily about a mother & son relationship. There are things characters do that you will undeniably question: why? As you understand the characters you begin to understand their actions, Which leads to a fantastic ending.

4. The Lighthouse(2019) Amazon Prime

This is probably going to be the most unusual movie on this list. But don't worry its still good. If you're the type of person that loves to dissect movie plots and scenes and what it all really means, then this movie will give you just that. The premise is simple, two men get stuck on an island. The slow madness that both the characters get into is hilarious and at times disturbing. The events that happen are weird and perhaps confusing and If you have the urge to stop watching becasue you can't understand what they're saying, thats normal! Let the emotions and the visuals carry you forward. You won't be dissapointed.

5. The Handmaiden(2016) Amazon Prime

Now if subtitles don't bother you(which they shouldnt), this will be a movie you wish you'd have watched back when it came out in 2016. This movie is thrilling from the start. The premise is a young woman getting hired to be a handmiaden of a Japanese heiress, however secretly she plots to defraud her. This premise is really just the beginning. The way the story turns and curves in different directions is what makes this movie so thrilling to watch. The most fascinating thing about this movie is how it subverts your expectations. You will not be disspointed.

Conclusions:

This list is my personal recommendation. You might think all these movies are bad, which is fine. Film is like food in the way that everyone has different tastes for it. Let me know what you think of these movies and maybe how I can improve my lists. I know there can be a lot of options right now with content and sometimes it takes too much energy just having to go through multiple streaming services. I hope this list helps you narrow down your choices.
