"Beyond the Gates" Week 23 Review

Loads of curveballs are thrown in the 23rd week of the CBS soap

Beyond the Gates is fully into the month of August, and even though summer is slowly coming to an end, it's getting hotter and hotter on this show. The week that passed was the 23rd in the soap's existence, and as a sports fan, I can tell ya, the number 23, well, that's a big deal. Seriously, this soap has really helped me out as I wait out the final few weeks until the NFL's regular season starts.

So much to talk about regarding this past week, and here are the highlights:

August 4

The Monday episode was the continuation of the Articulettes reunion performance that finally happened on the August 1 episode that ended Week 22. We saw Anita give a speech about the group's history, which led to the mention of Barbara Mitchell; the founding member who tragically took her own life years prior. As we saw weeks ago, the first mention of Barbara brought back waves of sadness and guilt from Anita, as she felt immensely responsible for Barbara's suicide. What we saw was not only a tribute to the Articulettes' fallen founding sister, but Anita honoring Barbara in such a heartwarming manner, while still carrying some guilt and some hope that she can be fully forgiven.

I absolutely love Doug McBride; I really do. I always have. I mentioned how he's basically a guy who fears that he is letting people down, and that's something I can relate to. However, this past week, he really showed out. For one, Doug gets read the riot act by Ted, and I couldn't but roll my eyes at this. I've said that regarding the sins of some of the guys on this show, Doug is so tame compared to Bill and especially Ted, yet Ted casts all sorts of aspersions on Doug? Please. So Doug decides he's done; quit his job, told Vanessa, stated he wants in on Vanessa and Joey's game--which he threatens to blow up! Holy moley!

August 6

Where do I start with Hayley? It's clear that Hayley is not preggers in the least, and the week saw Hayley go into double overtime to plan her "miscarriage." We saw Hayley "fall" in Bill's office, but the Wednesday episode saw Hayley quadruple down on the ruse. She starts a fight with Dani, because that's what she does best, and then the "anguish" starts. Suddenly, Hayley resurfaces--bleeding. How convenient. The worst part, for the first time, Dani actually had doubts about Hayley faking it. Now, as a result, Dani's carrying all sorts of guilt. So yeah, Hayley really pulled of a deceptive act. Now here's hoping Bill burns down the lie that keeps adding more layers to it.

Weeks ago, I said I'm pulling for Doug and Vanessa to make it. Now, I'm increasing that hope. Those two are so made for each other. What do those vows say? "For better or for worse." It's been chaotic as hell for Doug and Vanessa, and that's an understatement. However, what I saw in the Thursday episode between Doug and Vanessa was amazing. For all Doug's gambling vices and his troubles, for all of Vanessa's willingness to enjoy the dark side, their devotion to each other is still intact. I truly hope that they somehow get out of this unscathed, and that they remain together; stronger than ever.

August 8

Derek is such an idiot. From what I've seen, it seems like he still wants Ashley in his life. Why, I don't know. Does he not remember the last time they talked!? The woman is an anal-retentive nutjob! Yet Derek still seems to be hard up for her. I really don't get it. I thought he had something going with Shanise, but it looks like Derek's still pining for Ashley, who isn't even thinking about him. Ashley is deeper and deeper into Andre's web, and she's not looking to get out of it. But sure, Derek, keep chasing that lunatic who reacted to your proposal like you had committed murder or something.

The twists and turns on Beyond the Gates are getting wilder! As I said before, summer is about to come to an end, but the show is getting hotter and hotter!
