Atomic Habits - How I'm Implementing Them Into My Life
Book Review
Hello! I hope you are doing well. I'm not sure if this is a good platform for book reviews, but I thought why not? So here I am. With that in mind let's get right into it.
Atomic Habits by James Clear - Synopsis via Goodreads:
"No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving—every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results. If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves repeatedly, not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights."
I learned all about how to create habits. I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. Going into this experience, I was thinking: "What can this tell me that I haven't already heard." But boy, was I wrong. I learned a lot from this book.
James Clear is very good at laying out exactly what you need to do to make a habit stick. Within this book, he lays out a concept, and then an example of how each method works.
I took into account one of his methods to create my own habits. Specifically, "make systems, not goals," an idea that I had touched on before. The idea is that instead of simply laying out what you want to achieve, you lay out the groundwork for how you will achieve it.
In my case, I wanted to become more structured in my study and school work routine - of course at the end of my senior year. With this structuring routine in mind, I started using the resources available to me, an application called "todoist" in this case and implemented a way for myself to keep track of my work. I also am creating a routine where I update this application at the end of each week, adding in all my tasks for the week.
Of course, this is something that works for me, but it won't work for everyone. I also found other applications similar to this one that were great but don't work for my personality. Search "to-do list applications" on Google to find other great sites and apps.
With that in mind, James Clear also said to say things like "I am great at studying" instead of "I am trying to be great at studying" because a mindset change is necessary to achieving big goals. In a lot of ways, changing your mindset and your beliefs about yourself is half of the battle. If you can believe that you are active, or that you are successful in any way, you can achieve that goal you now believe yourself to be capable of.
There are many other specific ideas and practices like this within Atomic Habits, which is available in physical, digital, or audiobook formats.
If you are someone like me, who has always struggled with habits and consistency, I do believe this book could help you in more ways than one. I purchased this as an audiobook on Audible, but the resources within the book can be found at atomichabits.com once you purchase the book or audiobook.
Keep in mind that not every one of these methods will be something that works for you. This book has many chapters on different ways to create habits, methods that can be combined, or used individually. It is really up to you to find out which ones work for your life. It is not one size fits all, that's for sure.
Stay tuned for future book reviews! Thank you for reading.
