Anticipated Fall Anime: Dandadan Takes Center Stage

Dandadan Episode 1 Review

By animetipzPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Dandadan has been one of the most anticipated animes this year. I hadn't read the manga, so I knew very little about this story, but I was excited to see if it lived up to all of the hype.

They dropped 6 subbed episodes, and the first dubbed episode this week. I put it on excited to see what chaos was about to unfold. Let's talk about my thoughts on the first episode.

Storyline: Momo Ayase is a high school girl who believes in ghosts but not aliens, while her classmate Ken Takakura, whom Momo nicknames "Okarun", believes in aliens but not ghosts. In a bet to determine who is correct, the two decide to separately visit locations associated with both the occult and the supernatural - Momo visiting the former, and Okarun visiting the latter. Momo is abducted by a group of aliens who accidentally unblock her chakras, enabling latent psychic abilities. Meanwhile, Okarun is possessed by a spirit who takes over his body. They defeat the aliens together by using Momo's abilities and Okarun's possessed form.

The rest of the story follows the two, as they team up with fellow students, friends, family, and new acquaintances to fight spirits and aliens.

Info: 12 episodes

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi, Adventure

Rated: TV-PG

Episode 1 wastes no time throwing you into the character's lives. It starts as a pretty normal slice-of-life anime, normal kids in a high school setting. You meet our two main characters and quickly discover the different beliefs that bring them together. With Ken Takakura obsessed with aliens, and Momo Ayase believing in ghosts they challenge each other to face their beliefs. Soon to discover they are both correct.

Within the first 10 minutes you meet the main characters, learn a little about their backstory and Momo Ayase is kidnapped by aliens on their UFO while Ken Takakura is possessed by a ghost.

To say it is a fast-paced episode would be an understatement. I was shocked at how much they packed into 20 minutes.

I am currently obsessed with the art style. With the launch of Uzumaki, I loved the black-and-white style with harsh black lines, it felt as if the manga had come to life. With Dandadan it's extremely colorful and bazar. I felt as if I had watched a painting come to life. The art style reminds me a lot of the Zom 100 bucket list of the dead. They are not afraid of colors and fill up every space with them. The fact that both of these anime came out back to back and have mastered such different art styles has me excited to watch more of both.

Ratings:

IMDb: 8.7/10

Anime Planet: 4.2/5

My Review: It isn't surprising this anime has already received such high ratings. With its creative characters, unique storyline, and incredible art style I can see why people were so excited for its release. Again I haven't read the manga so I am not sure what to expect from the storyline, but after watching episode 1 I am excited to see how it plays out. From how chaotic episode 1 was I am going not going to assume anything about the story. If you enjoy the strange and unusual I would highly recommend checking out Dandadan.

Have you started watching Dandadan? What are your thoughts?

The Great Anime Debate - Subbed vs Dubbed

There are two ways to watch anime, and it has been debated for as long as I can remember which way is best. I have seen anime both subbed and dubbed, So I am going to give my thoughts on both and then which I prefer.

Exciting Detective Anime That Will Keep You Guessing

I have recently been getting into mystery anime. If well written it can get my heart pounding and brain racing to figure out how the story is going to play out. Although not all of the anime I am about to list are detective anime, a large majority will be. If you are a thrill seeker who loves a plot twist read on, I hope you will find your next mystery from this list.

The Wonderful World of Studio Ghibli

As many people did, I started my Studio Ghibli addiction with the famous spirited away. After watching that masterpiece I was HOOKED! I had to hunt down and watch every movie they created. The creator of most of the films Hayao Miyazaki brought a breathtaking world to our TVs. Every story is unique, and when you rewatch them another meaning comes to light. Character development is in each movie, with strong female leads. Heart-stopping art will make you want to be teleported into the wonderful world of Studio Ghibli.

Bye for now!
