FOR ALIENS’ 35TH ANNIVERSARY, A RETURN TO HADLEY’S HOPE!
It’s been 35 years since the tragedy of the Hadley’s Hope colony, but what happened to that ill-fated venture has been shrouded in mystery. A renegade crew of investigative journalists are heading towards the moon that Weyland-Yutani has wiped from all records, and they’ll bring back the truth even if it kills them…and what remains in that bombed out site will try to do just that. Benjamin Percy and Dave Wachter imagine a terrifying possible future for LV-426 in this celebration of the 35th Anniversary of one of the most influential science fiction films of all time!
This is one of the most interesting visits to LV-426 that we’ve had in a while. Don’t get me wrong I love the Dark Horse run of stories that were set there and I still do but this one has a little something extra about it. The so-called terrorists with Vasquez’s gut feeling about the Hadley’s Hope which of course was a complete and unmitigated disaster is on the money and this is going to lead him and his crew someplace they should never go.
I really like the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceedingly well. The character development we see through the dialogue, the character interaction, their actions as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter flesh them out exceptionally well. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story, the characters and their visit to this world is as solid and gripping as it gets.
I really appreciate how we see this being structured and how the layers emerge and grow is spectacular. The avenues we see open up are as varied as the cast of characters are and while not all of them will work with the main arc they all add this delicious depth, dimension and complexity to the story. How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is achieved exceptionally well.
The interiors here are absolutely phenomenal. The linework is exquisitely rendered and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to create this level & quality of detail work is truly a marvel. That we see backgrounds being utilised here and how they enhance the moments by bringing us that small enclosed space feeling to the far icy cold reaches of space it’s stupendous. How they also work within the composition of the panels creating the depth perception, a sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is fabulous. The first look at what remains of the settlement is this icy frozen wasteland is absolutely creepy as all get out. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is equally as brilliant to see. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work bring this to life in some wondrous ways.
The creativity and imagination that we see throughout this book is beyond expectations. This is some amazing writing and characterisation that reintroduces us to a place that started it all in some very real ways. Add to the mix these absolutely mind blowing interiors and you really aren’t going to be prepared for what you’ll experience. I’m so loving this interpretation and I want to see more of this world and what is left from this experience that the next group has to deal with.
