Alec Baldwin Files Lawsuit After Judge Drops ‘Rust’ Shooting Charges
Alec Baldwin Sues Over ‘Rust’ Shooting, Claims Prosecutors Scapegoated Him

Alec Baldwin has filed a major lawsuit following the tragic events on the set of the movie Rust. This legal move comes months after the charges against him were dismissed, but it’s clear Baldwin isn’t ready to let the matter rest.
The actor and producer is accusing prosecutors and investigators of mishandling the case in what he describes as a blatant attempt to make him the scapegoat for the shooting incident that led to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. His lawsuit alleges malicious prosecution, defamation, and civil rights violations, making it a bold step in a case that has already been under intense public scrutiny.

What Happened on the Set of Rust
In October 2021, during a rehearsal for the Western film, Baldwin was holding a pistol that discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin has consistently stated that he pulled back the hammer of the gun but did not pull the trigger. Despite his claims, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter, a charge that was dropped in July 2023 due to a lack of evidence.
The shooting itself was a tragic accident, but the legal fallout has been far from simple. Prosecutors accused Baldwin of negligence, while his defense argued that the mishandling of evidence and questionable decisions by investigators undermined the case from the start.

The Lawsuit Details
Baldwin’s lawsuit, filed in a Santa Fe court, names several defendants: special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, three investigators from the sheriff’s office, and the county board of commissioners.
The lawsuit claims that these individuals worked together to unfairly blame Baldwin for the incident, ignoring the actions of others on set who may have been at fault. According to Baldwin, their goal was to gain professional or political advantage by targeting him because of his high-profile status.
“Defendants sought at every turn to scapegoat Baldwin for the acts and omissions of others, regardless of the evidence or the law,” the lawsuit states. Baldwin is now seeking compensatory and punitive damages, as well as attorneys’ fees, in his fight to hold these individuals accountable.

Evidence That Shook the Case
One key factor in Baldwin’s defense is the handling of evidence. In March 2023, a man brought ammunition to the sheriff’s office, claiming it could be connected to the shooting. Prosecutors dismissed the ammunition as irrelevant, but Baldwin’s legal team insists that investigators ignored or buried this evidence, which could have impacted the case.
This discovery led to a motion to dismiss the charges, a motion that was granted in July. However, Baldwin believes the damage to his reputation has already been done, and he wants those responsible to face consequences.

Prosecutors Respond
Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey isn’t backing down. She stated that Baldwin’s lawsuit is retaliatory and that she has been aware of his plans to file it since late 2023. She welcomed the opportunity to present her side in court, making it clear that this legal battle is far from over.
Meanwhile, the state attorney general declined to appeal the dismissal of Baldwin’s charges, officially closing the criminal case in December 2023.
Other Legal Battles
While Baldwin fights this new legal battle, others involved in the Rust tragedy are facing their own consequences. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s weapons supervisor, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter last year and is now serving a 1.5-year prison sentence.
Hutchins’ family has also pursued lawsuits. Her parents and sister filed a claim against Baldwin and the other producers, while her widower and son reached a settlement in their case.

Baldwin's Next Step
Despite the ongoing legal drama, Baldwin has returned to work. He recently made an appearance on Saturday Night Live and is reportedly planning a reality TV show featuring his wife, Hilaria, and their seven children.
This lawsuit, however, shows that Baldwin isn’t willing to let the Rust case fade into the background. He’s determined to clear his name and hold those he believes mishandled the case accountable.
The fallout from the Rust tragedy continues to unfold, and Baldwin’s lawsuit is just the latest chapter in a story that has captured headlines around the world.
