We are headed down the witches road and the trials have begun. The first round of trials seemed to bring out the witches deepest fears. We got some very vague insight into each of them and I am hoping that this episode dives a little deeper into backstories and motivations. Episode 4 is titled If I can’t Reach You/Let My Song Teach You. Titling the episodes after lines of the song was a stroke of genius by the way. I love it. As always the fan theories have been floating around. Now that Sharron is dead the latest one that TikTok has come up with is that Rio and Sharron are one in the same and she’s been with the coven the whole time. I love this crazy theories. I think MCU fans are a little crazy and oftentimes their theories have no basis in reality but that is exactly why the weekly release format is so important. There is more time to feel connected to the show and get excited about it.
I love it when character ask questions that the audience also wants the answers to. It makes the story feel so much more real. Alice seems to be the center of this episode. The recap and the title seem to point to us getting more information about her.
The rest of the coven seems dead set on acquiring another green witch to replace Mrs. Hart. Despite Agatha’s assurance that they didn’t actually need one. So they decide to summon one to the road, enter Aubrey Plaza. Rio emerges from Sharron’s grave. Aubrey Plaza is really good at taking roles where she doesn’t really have to act and she can just be her in different settings and she’s built a really strong career like that.
Our next stop on the road appears and Alice tries to bail, the road however doesn’t give them any other options. The attire this time seems to 70s rock stars. This is definitely the best costuming of any MCU series.
The tension between Rio and Agatha is extremely well built. Kathryn and Aubrey are doing an incredible job of conveying a lot without saying anything at all. The show is also super gay. There is so much sexual tension between these two, it's amazing.
God the camerawork in this show is so interesting. It is the most visually stunning anything that the MCU has ever done.
The curse now gives Alice, our protection witch her time to shine. Katheryn Hahn is giving major Stevie Nicks vibes and it's amazing. I know there are going to complaints about having another full version of this song in the show but to that I say, suck it. There is so much happening in this scene. Their lives are literally in danger, Teen has glass sticking out of his side. Alice is dealing with some serious generational trauma and you can’t have Patti LuPone and only have her sing once. Also 70s vibes for this song was a great choice.
Agatha’s reaction to Teen collapsing really really points to her at least thinking that he's Nicholas. Whether that is the case or not we don’t know. But Agatha is panicking like a mom does. Jennifer saves his life proving that she is more then just potions. And that her power might be used outside of her being bound.
Alice realizes that her mother was trying to save her. The coven bonds over their individual trauma experiences. And while all of the other witches are bonding, laughing, getting closer. Agatha is sitting by Teen’s side waiting for him to wake up.
Agatha fully believes that this child is hers. Also Agatha is in love with Rio and visa versa. We were about to have a whole lot of gay but Rio had to go and tell Agatha that Teen is not Nicholas. Now we know that he is Billy but I really thought Marvel might be combining characters. With that last line I am now hoping that is not that case.
God this episode was so good. The pacing continues to be absolutely phenomenal and they continue to accomplish so much character development in such a short time. The cast is so phenomenal and the chemistry between the coven is so palpable. If I don’t see Katheryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza kiss by the end of this I am going to riot. We are halfway through the season and I am already sad.
