8 More Disney Movies to Make Your Day Better

When you need a comfortable watch with a sprinkle of magic

Disney's Lady and the Tramp

My one go-to thing for making myself feel better when I'm down, is Disney movies. If I'm feeling emotional I try to avoid movies with really sad parts or where something very traumatic happens. Here's a list of eight movies I've deemed as "safe" to watch on a bad day (slight spoiler alert).

The Rescuers (1977)

I don't know why this movie doesn't get more attention, it's so cute. The movie is about Bernard and Bianca, members of the Rescue Aid Society, which is essentially the mouse version of United Nations. The clumsy Bernard is paired up with the fabulous Miss Bianca for a mission to rescue Penny, an orphan girl who's been kidnapped by Madame Medusa and taken to Devil's Bayou. Madame Medusa is after the world's largest diamond, the Devil's Eye, which is in a narrow cave. Penny's forced down into the cave to search for the diamond, which is a dangerous mission. Bernard and Bianca set out to save her, and their journey includes an albatross flight, crocodile pets and unexpected swamp friends. It's a beautiful and heartwarming movie, and perfect if you're feeling down.

Mulan (1998)

If you're feeling that you've gotten yourself in a tricky situation that you don't know how you're gonna get out of, or you have a difficult decision to make, Mulan might make you feel better. When her father is called out to war, Mulan sneakily takes his place to save his life. This means disguising herself as a man, a crime that's punishable by death. She acquires one of the best Disney sidekicks, Mushu the dragon, and trains to become a soldier to protect China from the Huns. It's turning into the greatest challenge of her life, as she struggles both with the training and hiding her true identity from the (handsome) captain and her new friends in the group. The movie is both funny, serious and incredibly empowering. It's the first movie I remember watching in the theatre, and it'll always be a favourite of mine.

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

If you need some cute and wholesome content to make your day better, of course a movie about dogs is a good way to go. Lady and the Tramp is a beautiful story about how two dogs from very different background meet and eventually fall in love. They go through a lot together, and get to prove their loyalty and determination multiple times. Although I tried to keep this list tear-free, the ending has definitely made me happy cry a few times. It's such a beautifully made movie, and it includes such cute and quirky characters.

Moana (2016)

I can't get enough of the amazing animations and colours in this movie. Moana is the princess of the fishing village island Motunui, and loves the ocean, which she isn't allowed to explore. Her island is suddenly threatened by darkness caused by the island goddess Te Fiti's heart being stolen by Maui the demigod. Her grandma kept the heart safe, and after showing Moana that their people were once voyagers who thrived on the sea, she encourages her granddaughter to go restore Te Fiti's heart. It's not an easy journey, especially as she needs to convince the stubborn and selfish Maui to help her. The movie also has one of the most amazing soundtracks from any Disney movie, and I'd highly recommend for everyone to watch it.

Aladdin (1992)

Your worth as a human being isn't determined by where you're from or your socioeconomic background. Aladdin is an orphan who grew up on the streets of Agrabah, and gets by by hustling and stealing food to survive. He falls in love with Princess Jasmine, the Sultan's daughter who by law can only marry a prince. Jafar, the Sultan's advisor, is after the throne himself, and recruits Aladdin to obtain the magic lamp for him so he can utilise the powers of the Genie in his evil plans. Thanks to his loyal monkey companion Abu, Aladdin keeps the lamp and has the Genie help him on his quest to be with Jasmine. It's a beautiful movie full of magic moments and romance. "A Whole New World" is my favourite Disney love song, and the whole scene is amazing. This movie is a great symbol of being enough as you are, that you should never try to be something you're not and to always value your friendships and be there for the people you care about.

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

Tiana's story is a great example of how things can turn to the better. She's a waitress with big dreams of opening her own restaurant one day. This has lead her to develop an unhealthy work-life balance, as she never takes time off to have fun. Her childhood friend Charlotte and her rich father have invited Prince Naveen of Maldonia to celebrate Mardi Gras with them, hoping he'll marry Charlotte, who's always dreamed of marrying a prince. After working hard towards it her whole life, Tiana loses the restaurant she'd bid for, and resorts to wishing upon a star for her dream. This results in a crazy journey full of amazing personalities, some proper character development, kissing frogs, both a voodoo man and a voodoo queen, alligators, fireflies and much more. It's a beautiful movie with an amazing animation style, wonderfully catchy music and a great story.

Hercules (1997)

The opening scene alone is enough to put me in a better mood. The muses tell us about how Zeus jailed the titans and took his place as ruler of Mount Olympus, where the Greek gods live. Hercules is born, which calls for a huge celebration among the gods, except the god of the underworld, Hades, Zeus' brother. The Fates tell him that Hercules will become so strong that Hades' plans to take over the world will fail. To prevent this from happening, Hades sends his minions out to kidnap Hercules, take him to Earth and give him a potion that makes him mortal. Failing to give him the whole bottle, Hercules keeps his superhuman strength, although he's no longer a god. Although he grows up with wonderful adoptive parents he feels like a misfit, before he finally learns that he's Zeus' son, explaining why he doesn't fit in. To get to go back to Mount Olympus he needs to prove himself, which is a long and tough journey. He'll go through a roller coaster of emotions and struggles on his way, including falling in love for the first time. The ending of the movie is one of my all-time favourites, as it's so beautiful and heartwarming.

Brother Bear 2 (2006)

I don't often talk about sequels to Disney classics, as I honestly don't tend to like them (in the recent years the quality of sequels has taken quite a jump though). This is definitely a sequel worth watching. Kenai reconnects with his childhood friend Nita, whom he gave a special amulet to when they were kids. The amulet now prevents Nita from getting married, and she convinces Kenai to go to Hokani Falls with her to burn it. They clearly have great chemistry, which makes Koda jealous and fears that Kenai would rather be a human and be with Nita. It's both an emotional and fun movie, especially as it includes two of the best supporting characters in Disney history, the hilarious moose brothers Rutt and Tuke.

I hope these suggestions can help you pick a movie that'll brighten up your day. If you feel that some are missing, check out my other list of Disney movies that'll make you feel better.
