5 Reasons to Watch JJBA: 'Battle Tendency'

Why you should get into Part 2 of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Look at how fabulous he is.

In continuing my reviews of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, it’s time to dive in to Part 2, Battle Tendency. The great thing about Battle Tendency is that it shares a season with Part 1, Phantom Blood. You don’t have to go to a separate page to find it, Netflix will queue it up for you right when Phantom Blood ends. To be honest, I enjoyed Phantom so much, I was a little scared that I wouldn’t like Battle Tendency. How could it live up to the greatness that was Dio Brando? Would there be crazy action and zany dialogue for me to get sucked into? Good news, there was no need for me to fear.

Haven’t watched Part 1? Well see why I think you should here. Even if you haven’t, (though some other diehard Jojo fans might not like this) I think it’s okay to start at different parts and not watch the show in a linear fashion. While I believe watching the show in order makes the emotional payoff more satisfying, I understand if someone wants to start at a different part that looks interesting to them. If the recent Part 5 makes you amped to watch, for example, go for it and then go back to other parts leading up to it. If someone has an interest in something I love, I’ll never not tell them to watch, but to get into it however they want to. I watched Dragonball Z before I watched Dragonball, so sue me. This is just a long-winded way for me to say don’t feel pressured to watch Part 1 before Part 2 if the latter seems more appealing. You do you, anime is great, and here are my reasons why you should be watching Battle Tendency.

1 Joseph Joestar

Hoooooo boy. This guy. Joseph Joestar is the protagonist in Part 2 of Jojo. Since each part focuses on the next Jojo in the Joestar lineage, the viewer gets to fall in love with a totally different personality each time. Joseph is the follows Jonathan, and to say there is a personality difference would be an understatement.

Joseph is fun. He’s crazy, creative, and honestly doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks about him. He’s constantly doing things that make you say, “How in the hell did he come up with that?” With such a big personality, you’ll never be bored watching him, and you’ll always be waiting to see what he’ll do next. I love Joseph, and from the first moment he's on screen, you'll fall for him too.

2. The Villains

Every great Joestar needs a great villain. Luckily, Joseph gets a trio of maniacs to work with: the Pillar Men. If you’ve seen a Jojo meme, you’ve probably seen the Pillar Men entrance. Each of them has their own personality. Wamuu has the most emotional depth, Esidisi offers some great comedy, And Kars offers…a lot of power that I’m not going to spoil here. Jojo simply needs to be seen to be believed. They have style, they have poses, and they have some insanely fun fights with Joseph and his pals throughout the show.

In particular, Wamuu is a favorite to watch. His character is the most interesting to me, and his fights are the best, whether it’s against Joseph of Caesar. Speaking of Caesar…

3. The Side Characters

Caesar is the reason I loved Battle Tendency so much. He’s the Jobro of this arc, and his relationship with Joseph is so great. It’s fun and tense, and even though they don’t always see eye to eye, there’s a mutual respect there. I love the JoBros, and Caesar is no exception.

There’s a ton of other characters, like Speedwagon returning, and of course Lisa Lisa. Lisa Lisa is the embodiment of badassery everyone should strive to be. I love her character design and the way she carries herself. She’s really awesome, and easy to like immediately.

I also love Smokey, even though his part is pretty small. He reminds me of the audience, just along for the ride and seriously questioning what on earth is going on at all times.

4. The Animation

I say it all the time, I scream it from the rooftops, but Jojo has my favorite animation ever. Every season switches the style and it keeps things fresh. You can also see how the anime style evolves over time just like Araki’s (the creator) evolved as well. Battle Tendency and Phantom Blood are pretty similar, since they’re both technically in the same season. However, Battle Tendency has some brighter colors and wilder characters to work with. The color palettes often change to neon in intense scenes, and the fights have even more weird Hamon/magic action going on than before. Like in Phantom Blood, the proportions are ridiculous. Considering that the Pillar Men are almost completely naked, it makes the intense muscle game that much more extreme. I also feel like with the action ramped up in this part, the animation looks even better.

I also have to mention that Joseph has some hilarious visual comedy going on, whether it’s his antics in his early battles, or his posing. Guys, Joseph Joestar is amazing.

5. The Opening

Okay, my final point. Remember when I said there were bright colors? This opening has some of the most vibrant stuff I’ve seen in anime. Even though this opening isn’t a personal favorite of mine, it’s widely regarded as one of the best in the Jojo fandom. I can’t lie, it’s fantastic. The song is "Bloody Stream" by Coda, and it’s one of the catchiest, upbeat things you’ll hear. It’s addicting from the opening notes, and it immediately gives you the vibe of what Joseph is all about. The posing in the opening is flamboyant as hell and, they give you all the key plot points without giving away too much. I’m putting the opening down below, because you’ve got to check it out.

Battle Tendency is awesome. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure ups the ante with each part. The action gets bigger and the characters get wilder. If you’ve started Jojo, I suggest you keep going. I’m begging you. Don’t stop. It’s the most fun I’ve had watching a show ever, and I hope you have a great experience with it too.
