Women in Gaming: Ladies of Destiny

In the world of Gaming, you don't always think a woman is behind the controller. However, the world is changing and women are gathering together to share their love and passion for the video games they play. One such group of women gathers on Facebook and within the game of Destiny 2, a sci-fi first person shooter by Bungie.

These ladies are more than just female gamers, they are moms, wives, sisters, and a community willing to help those who want it! During my time in this group, I learned right away that anyone who asks for help will receive it. That's what makes this group so unique compared to other gaming communities. They strive to end the toxic behavior becoming so common within the gaming world, and want to share that with others.

The women I’ve connected with have been supportive, funny, understanding, sometimes extremely competitive, and all very capable.

It's no secret that women have entered the gaming world, and many of them are speaking up about it. These Members have said they learned not only how to get better at the game, but also overcome personal challenges. One such member, Shayna Carter, mentions how the Ladies of Destiny helped her meet amazing people and encouraged her to help others just as she had been helped. "I hid behind likes and hearts on others posts for a while then I finally made my own posts and got so much positive feedback."

The encouragement alone is something that makes this community feel more like a family than just another group of gamers.

"So many lovely ladies on here offered help and because of it all I now belong to an awesome clan that I play with daily. I no longer log on to an empty friends list like before and I have this group to thank for that."

Many members of the community talk about the difference between Ladies of Destiny and other Destiny based groups. It's vastly agreed on that the Ladies of Destiny truly try to create a toxic-free environment and that encourages them to play more everyday.

"You NEVER get that vibe EVER. Here, you can actually be for instance, low leveled and not have much experience but still have people willing to help you and be patience to get you through or even teach you certain campaigns or raids."

Member, Rachel Goodman, talks about the experience she had in the Ladies of Destiny group compared to others within the same game. "Finding this group gave me confidence and a place to fit in that brought all the joy back to playing." She speaks for many members when it comes to how this group of women made the game fun to play again.

"There is so much support and help here and I've never seen anyone ridiculed the way they are in other groups, no matter the question being asked."

These women have also been there to support each other in more than just the gaming world. Many speak up about how these ladies have helped them throughout the pandemic. Member Ximena Covarrubias mentions how the friends she made in this group helped her through her depression.

"They were my rock during this pandemic, specially during sleepless nights full of anxiety and depression."

Overall, these ladies are making an impact not just on the games they play, but the people they play it with. Each member who responded to us talks about how they grew to be better people, not just players, when they joined this community. Each Lady of Destiny I personally spoke with reminded me of a Valkyrie for Kindness, in a sense.
