Is a Grand Theft Auto Movie Starring Will Smith Really Coming in 2028? I Looked Into It

Is Will Smith Starring in a big screen adaption of the Rockstar franchise GTA ?

I was scrolling through my feed the today when I saw something wild. A viral post claiming that a Grand Theft Auto movie is coming out in 2028 starring Will Smith. The headline had thousands of shares, and people in the comments were already debating which GTA character he would play. Some said Franklin, others thought he might be a completely new character written for the film. As someone who has spent half my life and most my teenage years driving through digital versions of Los Santos and Liberty City, I had to know if this was actually real or just another rumor that exploded online.

The idea of a GTA movie instantly caught my attention because honestly, it sounds incredible on paper. The franchise has everything a big Hollywood blockbuster could want. Crime, action, drama, and over-the-top characters that already feel cinematic. Add Will Smith to that mix and you basically have the internet’s dream casting. But after the initial excitement faded, I remembered something important. Rockstar Games, the studio behind GTA, has always been protective of its creations. They rarely hand over creative control to outside producers. That was my first red flag.

So I decided to dig deeper. I started with the obvious step, searching for any official statement from Rockstar or their parent company, Take-Two Interactive. I came up empty. No press releases, no interviews, no leaks from credible entertainment reporters. What I did find were a bunch of speculative articles with clicky titles like “Everything We Know About the GTA Movie” or “Will Smith to Star in Rockstar’s Next Big Project.” Most of them were just reworded versions of the same viral post, with no actual proof or insider confirmation.

Still, I wanted to give the rumor a fair shot. I checked IMDb, social media accounts for Will Smith, and even film production tracking sites that list projects in early development. Nothing. Not even a whisper about a GTA adaptation. If something that massive were really in the works, it would be impossible to keep it totally secret. Casting announcements leak all the time. Even when studios try to hide them, some anonymous insider usually posts something that hints at the truth. Here, there was silence.

The deeper I looked, the more it started to feel like one of those social media snowballs that rolls out of nowhere. Someone posts a convincing image or mock movie poster, people share it without fact-checking, and suddenly it becomes internet reality. I actually found a few fake posters floating around showing Will Smith standing next to the GTA VI logo. They were clearly AI-generated, but I’ll admit, they looked convincing enough to trick a lot of people scrolling by at midnight when your laying tired on your bed.

To make sure I wasn’t missing anything, I also revisited some past interviews with Rockstar executives. They have said multiple times that they are not interested in turning GTA into a movie. One executive even explained that the world of GTA gives players freedom to make their own stories, something a two-hour film could never capture. That makes sense to me. The chaos and choice are part of what makes GTA fun. You decide what kind of character you are. You can play it serious or ridiculous. A film would strip all that freedom away.

After hours of reading, fact-checking, and following dead links, I came to the conclusion that there is absolutely no evidence of a Grand Theft Auto movie coming in 2028, and definitely not one starring Will Smith. The rumor seems to have started as a viral fan theory that people mistook for a leak. Once it hit TikTok and Reddit, the hype machine took over. It’s a perfect example of how quickly misinformation spreads in gaming culture. Someone mixes wishful thinking with a touch of AI art, and suddenly the internet thinks a blockbuster is confirmed.

Original GTA character looks like something Will Smith can pull off

Even though it’s fake, I can understand why the idea caught fire. Will Smith has that star power and energy that could fit inside the GTA universe. He’s got the charisma for a lead role in a story full of chaos and redemption. And gamers are hungry for big adaptations that actually work. We’ve seen hits like The Last of Us and Fallout prove that game-to-screen stories can succeed when handled with care. So it’s no surprise fans want to believe that GTA will be next.

But for now, the truth is simple. There is no confirmed GTA film in development, and Will Smith is not attached to any such project. What we do know is that Rockstar is fully focused on the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, which is expected to release in 2026. If that game ends up being as massive as everyone expects, maybe Hollywood will take another look at adapting it someday. Until then, the viral 2028 rumor is just that, a rumor.

I’ll admit though, part of me hopes Rockstar changes its mind one day. The GTA world deserves a real shot on the big screen, or maybe even a Netflix or Hulu series, but it needs to be done right. Maybe with the right director and cast, it could work. For now, though, we’ll have to stick to the digital streets of Vice City and Los Santos. At least there, we’re the ones in control.
