Are you a fan of horror game or horror movies? Have you ever wondered after playing or watching, “Who in the world is going to clean all this up?” Well, wonder no more as Viscera Clean-up Detail answers that very question! It’s you, it’s always going to be you.

Viscera Clean-up Detail has a special place in my heart. I first discovered this game in college when it was released in 2015, and it consumed me for a long time. It changed the gaming sphere when it came to cleaning games, as I don’t believe anyone had created such a detailed game like this one. I loved the attention to detail, the gore, and the atmospheric sounds each action and level took to immerse the player.

Now, the question remains if we will get a sequel to this beloved game or not, as a sequel was announced by the developers, RuneStorm, in February of 2024, but it’s still unsure if it’s in development limbo or not. A sneak peak was shown, looking very similar to the original game.

However, let’s take this moment to praise the game.

Horror movie aspects: This game is definitely not for the squeamish. There’s body parts, guts, blood, human and alien alike. Did I mention robots? There are robot parts as well. If you love the horror movie aspect even more, you can get the Halloween DLC and point out many Easter Eggs in the large level filled with slaughter from famed horror movies such as Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween.

Surprising death threats: This game is not without its own dangers. While some levels can be played without the fear of dying, others have lasers, bullets, and living pits to eat the player alive if they get too close. Also, if you are playing with a buddy in the co-op mode, it’s up to you to clean up your buddies. Apparently, that’s part of the contract.

Attention to detail: While this cozy game for horror lovers can be easy-going and fun after a stressful day, it can also bring out it’s own stress levels. Make sure you clean up every spec of blood, every bullet casing, and every bullet hole. While ratings don’t matter, and money is no object, it will still irk the player to get letters in the office complaining about those missed details. And the letters are a plenty.

New developments for the upcoming sequel:

This new game is going to be on the Unreal Engine 5, as Unreal Engine 4 is being phased out and unsupported lately.

Some key takeaways from this update include what the developers say is uniqueness over quantity, mainly pointing out the bullet holes and casings, just as I pointed out earlier in the article.

A new addition to the game will be a drop pod, carrying all the essentials that the player will need, including their own toilet (do you have to clean that too?) and the vending machine for the necessary replacement parts on the level you are on.

Your office will be larger, with tutorials and player education on the mechanics. The developers stated that while they did notice that the first game was not conducive to new players, they said they also don’t believe in hand-holding for the sake of education when they player can have more fun figuring it out on their own. To which, I say, I definitely agree that the trials I had to go through to know that the mop can only clean so much before it began to spread more of the mess taught me better than any tutorial ever could have.

As I was writing this piece, the developers posted an update as of June 5, 2025 saying that there will be an update on the development of the new game on the weekend, June 7, 2025. Here’s to hoping we get a great new game!
