The Hidden History of Thedas: Dragon Age’s Forgotten Gods

From the Fade to the Evanuris—Unraveling the Secrets of the Dread Wolf’s Betrayal

By Geek PeekPublished 7 months ago 3 min read

The world of Dragon Age is built on lies.

Not the small, harmless kind—like Varric’s “slightly exaggerated” stories or your Warden promising Leliana they definitely didn’t loot that sacred urn. No, we’re talking grand, world-shattering deceptions, the kind that rewrite history itself. The Chantry preaches of the Maker, the Dalish cling to their tales of the Evanuris, and Solas? Well, he’s busy sighing at all of them like a professor grading a failing student’s paper.

But what if the truth is even stranger? What if the gods of Thedas weren’t divine at all—just powerful mages who got too greedy? And what does a brooding, bald elf with a god complex have to do with it?

Strap in. We’re digging into the buried lore of Thedas, where every answer leads to another question, and the only thing thicker than the intrigue is Solas’s audacity.

The Chantry’s Maker: A Convenient Truth?

The Chantry’s version of history is simple: The Maker created the world, got fed up with mortals, and left. But here’s the problem—there’s zero proof. No ruins, no artifacts, just faith. Meanwhile, the Dalish whisper of the Evanuris, their "gods" who ruled in a time before humans.

So who’s right?

Trick question. They’re both wrong.

Enter Solas, everyone’s favorite elven apostate-turned-god-slash-hypocrite. According to him, the Evanuris weren’t gods, they were ancient elven mages who hoarded power, enslaved their people, and probably had way too many statues made of themselves. And the Maker? Well, Solas has never mentioned him. Suspicious.

The Evanuris: Gods or Just Really Bad Roommates?

If the Evanuris weren’t divine, what were they?

  • Mythal (Flemeth’s favorite alter ego): The "goddess" of justice and vengeance, who may or may not have been assassinated by her own kin. (Spoiler: She was.)
  • Elgar’nan: The "god" of vengeance, who basically threw cosmic tantrums whenever things didn’t go his way.
  • Andruil: The "goddess" of the hunt, who went full Lovecraft after dabbling in the Void and had to be put down like a rabid halla.

Solas claims they locked away their worst offender, the Dread Wolf (oh, the irony), but let’s be real—he’s not exactly a reliable narrator.

Solas: The Wolf Who Cried God

Ah, Solas. The man who freed slaves, then enslaved the world.

His story goes like this:

  • Ancient Elvhenan was a utopia (if you ignore the slavery).
  • The Evanuris got power-hungry, so he created the Veil to lock them away.
  • Oops. This also destroyed elven civilization, doomed the world to fade-induced decay, and made him the ultimate "I didn’t think this through" meme.

Now he wants to tear down the Veil, consequences be damned—because apparently, apocalyptic redemption arcs are in fashion.

The Real Question: Who’s Still Pulling Strings?

Here’s where it gets messy.

  • The Forgotten Ones: The Evanuris’ shadowy rivals, possibly locked in the Abyss. Are they worse? Who knows!
  • The Old Gods: The dragon-y beings the Tevinter Imperium worshipped. Are they fallen Evanuris? Something else?
  • The Blight: Where did it really come from? (Solas blames the Evanuris. Shocking.)

Every answer leads to three more mysteries, and BioWare loves it that way.

Conclusion: Thedas’s History is a Lie (And Solas is Tired of Your Questions)

The truth? There is no truth. Just layers of myth, manipulation, and one very tired elf who’s done explaining.

But that’s the beauty of Dragon Age—the lore isn’t set in stone, it’s written in blood, lost in time, and buried under Solas’s mountain of regrets.

So the next time you hear a Chantry sister preach or a Dalish keeper recite the tales of the Creators, remember: Somewhere, Solas is facepalming.

And he’s probably judging you too.
