Understanding the Mindset of a “Good” Tarkov Player
We’ve spoken about this topic before; many months ago. About what makes a “good” Tarkov player. And today, I wanted to make sort of a follow-up video to that idea. Previously, we talked about how aim, knowledge of the maps, and adaptability were cornerstone components to making a lethal and effective Tarkov player. And while those are definitely still important, upon reflection of the idea of what is a “good” Tarkov player, there have been other ideas and components that I’ve taken into more serious consideration that would arguably be sometimes more important that those previously talked about ideas. I’m sure most of us that play the game also watch others play it. And especially those that are prominent and skillful at the game. You watch their gameplay, and you can sometimes pick up on little ticks or muscle memory from doing the same thing thousands of times before. What they end up using a majority of the time, and how they bend and stretch the game to play more under their own rules. There is a lot more nuance with these ideas, and it isn’t as concrete and simple as the previous video. It boils down to more of a mentality thing, as well as repetition of playing the game a certain way. And that’s what I wanted to discuss today: the smaller, finer details of playing Tarkov and what aspects you can focus on once you have the basics and fundamentals down to really grow as a player. Again, it’s not as cut and dry, nor pretty as giving someone three tips and they immediately improve. Tarkov, and we’ve said this before many times, is a complex game with a ton of layers, situations, moments where one idea might apply but not the other. It’s important to understand the why as much as the how. So, let’s try and understand what goes into the mindset of a good Tarkov player.

When Do Players Start Taking Games Seriously?
Games are meant to be fun, correct? Sometimes depending on the game, or what the developer wants the player to experience, that ideology can go straight out the window. Some might not get a kick out of what is being offered, while others might play that game and enjoy it despite the game doing everything in its power to make sure you don’t have fun. But regardless of the genre, or style of game you decide to sit down and experience, games are a recreation that people can enjoy either by themselves, or with random strangers across the internet, or with their friends. This can be especially true with couch gaming sessions with your buddies. From Mario Party to split-screen Halo, or something like Super Smash Bros. Depending on your friend group, there might be a moment, a single flicker in time, where someone decides that they want to win the game. Even though it’s all good times and everyone is just here to hang out, we all have that one person in our life that decides, no. Today, I will win the video game. And they do the tried-and-true sit up and lean forward, with their elbows on their thighs; signaling to everyone in the room. This guy wants to win. Others might follow suit after seeing the first person, but this got me thinking, when do we as players of video games begin to take them “seriously”. And why? If we’re here to have fun, what makes a person take that extra step to wanting to be victorious in a game with friends? I have some personal experience with this myself, so I wonder if my experience was the same as anyone else's. So, let’s talk about the when, why and how for players getting serious.

Tarkov's Arena is Still Problematic (And Might Always Be)
Arena recently got a relatively large update that also coincided with a wipe; resetting everyone’s rank and preset progress back to pretty much zero. And with the update came some large changes to the presets, how you unlock them, and how they are divided up between themselves. While I won’t be going into the specific details of the patch notes, I’ll leave a link in the description if you want to read them yourself, after playing the new version of Arena, things don’t feel like they are headed in the right direction for some elements of this game mode. There are plenty of changes that were positive: removing grenades from pretty much all the classes and adding them to the world level. Allowing players to funnel their experience towards a specific preset they want to unlock and being able to use any preset within that respective class. Standardizing the medication each preset has so at the very least everyone has painkillers. These were important changes to help reign in the power of each preset. But the problems with Arena go deeper than just number tweaks and adjusting the equipment on offer for a particular present. As badly as I want Arena to be successful and a fun, faster-paced alternative to regular Tarkov, I fear as though that Tarkov was never truly meant to be an arena style shooter. Some people might immediately say, well no shit, of course the writing was on the wall. And you’re kind of right; but I had hopes deep down that BSG would find an interesting way to bring the slower more methodical gameplay of Tarkov to a faster paced environment. And so far, it doesn’t feel like they understand the root issues with trying to artificially speed up Tarkov. There’s still time to figure it out, and their roadmap is substantial enough that we might get there eventually, but let’s go over why fundamentally, Tarkov’s arena mode might never get where the player base as well as BSG hopes to get it.

LVOP or Low variable power optic is a style of scope that usually has two magnifications that can be adjusted to either or. And Tarkov has plenty of these choices on offer. The Burris 1-4x, the Razor 1-6x, Vudu 1-6x and Schmitt and Bender 1-8x. These scopes are highly sought after and can be extremely powerful in the right hands, on the right weapon. But that begs the question: are these kinds of scopes too powerful in the game? Because let’s be real for a moment: you see one of these on a gun, or in the world, where is that optic going?
