Should You Even Buy Sims 4 Kits?

Is the 4.99 price tag worth it?

Made with Perchance.

The Sims 4 is over 10 years old now, yet it still produces new content every month or so. While that's good for the people who love the Sims 4, one of the controversial issues with these packs was the addition of Kit packs.

If you haven't been in the Sims 4 loop in a while, a kit pack is a tiny pack with little themed stuff you can buy for 4.99. To give a frame of reference, there are four different kinds of packs in the Sims 4: The Expansion Pack, The Game Pack, The Stuff Pack, and the Kit Pack. The Expansion Pack is the most fleshed-out pack with all sorts of Create-A-Sim fashion, hair, and accessories, Build/Buy mode activities for making different venues and houses, Gameplay activities to enhance your playthrough, Usually a new world, and all different kinds of features and a career or two. Expansion Packs are 39.99 typically. Game packs are more miniature than Expansions. They tend to have all the things that an Expansion has but on a smaller scale. Some of them have new worlds, and some don't, while others focus on bringing something new, such as the Vampires Game pack brought Vampires, Spa Day brought in spas as well as skills, Parenthood expanded families in the Sims 4 and taking care of child and teen sims, etc. These packs tend to be really good, and they cost 19.99. Next is Stuff packs. Stuff Packs never come with a World and are even more down-scale on items than the Game packs. However, some add certain features such as "Vintage Glamour" adding butlers or "Tiny Living" adding the tiny home lot trait. These stuff packs tend to add just a little more gameplay and tiny clothing and building objects for 9.99. Then, finally, there are Kits. Kits add very little, and instead of adding gameplay, clothing, and building material like the rest of the packs, kits only focus on one of these aspects. For example. The only gameplay kit was "Bites the Dust" which added vacuums and allowed your sims home to get dusty. There is also the "Urban Homage" Kit, which only adds new clothing, and the "Artist Studio" Kit, which only adds building accessories. These are the smallest pack and only come with about 8 to 10 items or maybe a tiny bit more for the price tag of 4.99.

Now that you know how Sims 4 packs are, we can answer the question, why are kits so controversial? Well, Kits are new. They were added a few years ago, and people say they are an opportunity for the Sims team and EA to get more money from their players. Not to mention, kits can be made fast, which only adds the credibility that they are just adding them for Simmers to open their wallets. However, while the kits have been a hot issue for a while, the Sims team has started working with Content Creators to work on them. In fact, the kit I mentioned earlier, Urban Homage, was created by a Content Creator named Ebonix. The Sims Team also has two kits coming out soon. The "Cozy Kitsch" kit and the "Sweet Slumber" kit. The first kit will be created by Myshunosun, and the second by Trillyke. Both are well-known creators in the sims, and not only will their work be featured, but they will get paid as well. So not only are you supporting these creators, but you are also getting something for it.

Even with helping out creators and the little extra content, is it worth the 4.99 price tag? I would say yes and no. It depends on what you value when you play the Sims. If you are a console player like me, then you don't get mods, and you rely on these packs to add gameplay to your playthrough. However, you do not need every kit. While I do love many of the kits, I only buy the ones that I see myself using. I don't just buy all the kits, and you shouldn't either. Are there some good ones? Absolutely. I believe that "Bites the Dust" really added to my gameplay of the sims, and the clothes of "Urban Homage," as well as "Goth Galore," added new styles to my sims. You should only get the kits you believe you will play with, not the ones you can potentially see yourself using but never do.

At the end of the day, how you buy and play with the Sims is up to you. There are a lot of things you can get in the Sims with the kits, and you can easily play the game without kits altogether, but whether they are worth it is up to you and what you value in your playthrough.
