Agent Onyxcat paused, took a deep breath, and checked her phone chat before the necessary deed was to be done.
“No! Not yet!” Agent FlagrantFraudster echoed desperately through the chat. “You need to get over to the Wooden Walkway on the Southeast end of Meadow Lake before Town Hall can be taken care of.”
She recalculated the plan. “Ah, yes, you’re correct. Just got the memo. Thank you.”
She turned down Maple Street, crossed over to Lowland Avenue, and crept slowly through the swampy underbrush of Meadow Lake. Her grey sneakers were already mud-covered, and wet leaves stuck to the legs of her black yoga pants. She always wore black, or camouflage to be stealth.
“Agent Onyxcat now at Meadow Lake, by the walkway, just a few meters away.” She announced through the headphones.
“Excellent..but make sure you’re alone and not followed” Agent BravoAlphaDelta barked.
Agent Onyxcat looked around, always on full alert.
“Nobody here” she reported.
“Okay, go!” Agent FlagrantFraudster shouted.
She looked around, and knew that danger could lurk around any corner.
Now to the task at hand: She pressed the button on the screen; the sound of weapons blasted through her ear buds. The Wooden Walkway goal had been reached.
“Wooden Walkway completed…now headed for Town Hall!” Agent Onyxcat stated softly, as to not alert the enemy.
Suddenly, she heard a low rustle not far from where she last stood, and turned her head to see none other than her archenemy, Agent NocturnalHero, now on the walkway, who was headed full on toward her. Agent NocturnalHero was known as “Zero” to the foes he made. He was a cocky dullard and a bully who taunted Agent Onyxcat as well as her teammates, and always strove to get the upper hand. The enemy agent was also dangerous, known to be a stalker and predator. Agent NocturnalHero was hated by nearly everyone he knew, and he was known to cheat and steal to get what he wanted.
Agent Onyxcat upped her speed as she crept through the weeds, and found the ground to be dangerously unstable. Sweat beads appeared on her brow. As she emerged from the wooded area away from the walkway and crept from the rocks and mud, she crouched around nearby cars and other large objects to appear to be smaller. The goal was to evade capture.
“Damn…Zero’s here..he found me”.
Agent BravoAlphaDelta shouted “you need to lose the dude…you need to get to Town Hall before SpotCheck. Hurry!”
There were to be no errors…the Op must be done…the clock marched on, loudly…or was that her heartbeat?
Once out of the muddy lake area and even further from the walkway, she ran soundlessly through the town’s sports complex, then made a run for the tavern car lot. She found cover along the nearby culvert across from the car lot, and went underneath a shelter. Only then she dared to look back.
From what she could see, she lost the enemy agent, and she chuckled. “What a moron!” she uttered to herself.
“He does not know the next target, so proceed carefully.” FlagrantFraudster’s calm demeanor was welcome to Onyxcat after that close call.
As she wound her way through the back of the car lot and toward the tavern, she caught her breath. No need to be caught on the street, she thought to herself. She was not to be the one to blow the Op. She ducked through the door of the local tavern to take a moment to calm down and regroup.
“Agent Onyxcat, where are you?” Agent BravoAlphaDelta startled her. She jumped, and her hand rose to her chest.
“Took cover at Tavern-On-The-Water” Onyxcat’s hushed tone resonated. “Gonna look around, make sure Zero’s not nearby, then make my way to Town Hall.”
Too late. Enemy Agent Zero’s smug face appeared as he loomed near the tavern’s doorway.
“Aha! Caught ya, Lady Onyxcat!” he sneered.
Angered, Agent Onyxcat attempted to shove past the agent, but not before he latched onto her arm. “Got somewhere to go?” he mocked. Even though he laughed, Agent Zero’s eyes were cold and malevolent.
“Get your hands off me, you creep!” Agent Onyxcat yelled as she struggled to be free of the bad actor’s steely grasp. Her heart thumped loudly, but she was not scared. She was not one to be fearful.
Agent Zero attempted to drag her back to the black SUV he drove, but she was faster than he was, and once her leg shot out and he flew backwards, she knew she had won that battle. The art of Taekwondo got her out of many, many tough spots and she emerged unscathed.
She took off toward the street, and dared to watch as he got smaller and smaller. Good deal that she was a fast runner. The agent’s heavy frame slowly rose up from the ground. But not to be outdone, he shouted after her “That all you’ve got?”
“We play honorably!” she heard Zero yell lamely from far away.
“Hahaha, what a manly man-Not!” she snorted to herself and laughed.
“Onyxcat, Onyxcat, you there?” Agent FlagrantFraudster asked tensely.
“Yeah…had a close call but headed to the Town Hall now! Tell you all about Zero later.” She spoke through a low, hushed tone.
As she approached Town Hall, Agent Onyxcat hoped that she would be able to elude Agent Zero long enough to get the plan done.
“Hurry up, there are only a few more seconds left!” shouted Agent BravoAlphaDelta.
She dared to look up to see Agent Zero amble slowly toward the black SUV. He looked to be not badly hurt. She rolled her eyes as he managed to make way onto the street from the lot. He started to speed up toward her as she turned the corner on foot, and she ran to the car lot across from Town Hall.
Once she reached the back of Town Hall and took her spot, she saw that Agents BravoAlphaDelta and FlagrantFraudster had not gotten there yet. They were on the way from the other end of town, so she had to do the Op on her own.
Agent Onyxcat paused before she pressed the red button on her cell phone.
“Town Hall Destroyed” rang out through her headphones.
“Done deal!” she laughed, and she heard the other agents cheer through the headphones.
“Too bad Agent Zero, you were defeated, as always!” she thought. The deed was done.
Agent Zero then pulled up, but was too late. Jaw clenched, he shouted “You may have won the round…but we’ll be back for the next SpotCheck!”
As he sped away from the small town, she saw Agents BravoAlphaDelta and FlagrantFraudster round the corner and whooped gleefully.
O! The joy of a cell phone augmented real world computer game!
