I like the fact that you can grow on the characters you play if you walk around in the street. That sounds true in road 96, and it's the crazy things you get to do along the way and characters you encounter long after the credits have closed. Road 96 "s title is a nod to the name of the road that leads to the fictional us's northern border, petria, where a randomly generated hitchhiker marathon can send desperate teenagers on a political road trip for a year in a row.
One of the great things about this game is that you can play it over and over again until you get the plot of the main characters.
There are some tough choices to make on a cross-country road tour, from the quantity of salty snacks you can stock up on at gas stations to controlling the radio to work your way through, and road 96 takes you through a series of busy roads. It is fun to see how the game presents itself, with time, character percentages, maps, completion zones, meters and a net. Road 96 may be linear, but it's billed as a procedural road trip game, and your decisions are important.
The characters in road 96 are rich, and while i enjoyed spending time with them and learning more about them, the game captured the essence of a cross-country road trip better than meaningless chats to pass the time or to have deep conversations about the meaning of life. I had the feeling that a road trip was done exactly as it should be. A political road trip is sometimes made exciting and entertaining, but it is discarded by the piecemeal nature of its narrative and the story itself.
Road 96 shows a teenager who has been separated from her parents and fled to petria, a fictional country very similar to the southwestern united states. When i traveled there for the second time, i played the game not only to connect with the four in the back seat of the van, but also with a runaway teenager named zoe, one of the game's central characters. I had met her in previous runs and she mentioned that it felt like my experiences with the game in the past had had an impact on the world.
One of the teenage stories ends, and in the next episode you pick another teenager to make the trek to the border. As i reach the border, i see graffiti painted on the cave walls from earlier times, reinforcing the notion that teenagers playing road trips will shape petria. When you reach your last teenager on the border, it's election day, and the story of the game, life is strange, is full of big and small decisions based on stories you don't know you're putting together, scenes, encounters, and conversations that have no particular recipe to follow.
Although i appreciated the decision to base a procedurally generated adventure game on such a small task, i wish there were a few more characters i could meet on the journey and even more scenarios and characters that would give me the extra motivation to immerse myself in a new game and start it all again. The first play-through of road 96 assumes that you're playing as one of the teenagers, and if you take your teens across the border and don't do that, you'll get the end of the game.
