A Pokemon Playthrough

My First Blog!

Hi there! My name is Ty and welcome to my first blog post! I'll be honest, I don't know what I am doing with creating this blog, but I have to take my first step somewhere!

That being, when thinking about what topic I could use to start my blogging career, my thoughts went straight to one of my favorite games in the world: Pokemon! I have actually always wanted to do playthroughs of the Pokemon games with people reading along with my adventures, so why not start now!?

Sadly, in the year 2020, I no longer own a Gameboy or any of the Pokemon games. I do, however, have a 3DS and a copy of Omega Ruby, but that's getting ahead of ourselves. Fortunately, video game emulators exist! That means that I can start my blog with the remade version of one of the games that started it all: Pokemon Red version.

A bit of history!

OK, I know that at this point there are going to be a couple of confused readers here that may not be familiar with the video game part of the Pokemon franchise.

The first entries of the Pokemon games, Red and Blue versions, came out in the US in 1998, following the release of the original anime. The games have you take control of your own player character in place of Ash Ketchum. The player is able to build the own unique team of Pokemon(6 Magikarps for example) and trek through Kanto on the journey to become a Pokemon Master.

Well Pokemon got so popular that people needed more of it. 150 monsters wouldn't cut it! At the present in 2020, there are 8 main regions in the Pokemon world, each with their own anime and video game series. Oh, and speaking of the video games, there are now a whopping 32 main games, including the remakes!

The third generation of Pokemon games brought forth the Hoenn region in 2003 (for the US). Sappire and Ruby versions were phenomenal games and are possibly my favorite in the franchise. This is largely because they came out on the next generation of Gameboy, the Gameboy Advance. Naturally, with new tech and nostalgia, Pokemon looked back to where it began and remade the originals. In 2004, FireRed and Leafgreen were released for the Gameyboy Advance.

All caught up now?? No?... Well I'm moving on anyway.

It's time to catch'em all!

Making our way out of the player's house, we follow the scent of Pokemon until we wind up at Prof. Oak's Lab and are faced with our first decision as a brand-new Pokemon Trainer... Which Pokemon do we choose as our first companion???

Should I end this blog here? Ooooh, that would be funny for me...but maybe that isn't the best way to end my first blog! So without further ado, our companion will be: Squirtle!

I've decided to go with the Water-type starter purely for nostalgic reasons. Back when I was a young Pokemon Trainer and buying my first pack of Pokemon cards, can you guess what my first card was? No, not Squirtle. It was a Blastoise! And I still have that card to this day!

Gary chooses Bulbasaur as a counter to our Squirtle, beginning our rivalry. Poor Charmander. The mascot of this game, and he just gets left on the table... I always thought Charizard was over-rated anyway! Moving on, with our starter in tow we can now make our way out of Pallet Town and on towards Viridian City, where we have to retrieve an item from the pokeMart for Prof. Oak. Upon completing that task, Oak rewards us with a Pokedex and some Pokeballs. Now our adventure can truly begin!

Journeying back through Viridian City and on to Pewter City, we round out our team with a Mankey. We don't want to break poor Squirtle's back right? (I totally won't mention that I rushed headlong into Viridian Forest unprepared...and that Squirtle ended up fainting from poison in just the second trainer battle)... Anyways, Mankey and Squirtle are more than enough to defeat the famed Light Year Junior and the Gym Leader, Brock, awarding us our Boulderbadge!

Here is our team after beating Brock:

I actually got lucky here. Mankey was able to take on Brock alone and underleveled. Brock's Geodude only used Defense Curl, and when Onix came out it was OHKO'd by Mankey's Low Kick!

Onwards!

Now that we've got the Boulderbadge, the aide on the right side of Pewter city will let us through. The path to Mt. Moon is open!

Alright! Progress!

But now I'm going to end this post here because I don't want these blogs to get so long that no one wants to read the whole thing! Next time, we will be going through the next two gyms!

See ya!
