Joao Pedro Shines Bright: Chelsea’s £600m Search for a Striker May Finally Be Over
The Brazilian forward announces his arrival with two stunning goals in the Club World Cup semi-final, raising hopes he’s the true No.9 Chelsea have long been missing.

Chelsea’s quest to find a reliable frontman might finally be over. After spending over £600 million on 19 forwards under their new American ownership since 2022, it looks like Joao Pedro could be the one to lead the line for the Blues.
The Brazilian forward, who just joined from Brighton last week, is already making headlines – and for good reason. In only his second appearance for Chelsea, he scored two brilliant goals that helped his team reach the Club World Cup final. It was a dream debut, and fans are now wondering: is Joao Pedro the frontman Chelsea have been missing?
Making an Instant Impact
Joao Pedro wasted no time in showing what he’s capable of. In the semi-final match against Fluminense – his boyhood club – he started the game and delivered two stunning goals that turned heads across the football world.
His first goal came after just 18 minutes. The ball was half-cleared to him near the edge of the box, and after taking a touch to set himself, he smashed a powerful shot into the far corner. The 44-year-old Fluminense keeper, Fabio, had no chance. His second goal came in the second half, where he sprinted onto a perfect pass from Enzo Fernandez, charged into the penalty area, and hammered a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. Two goals in one night – not a bad way to introduce yourself to your new fans.
"It's a dream," Joao Pedro told DAZN after the game. "I only came here a week ago, and now I'm going to play the final. I couldn't ask for more."
Chelsea’s run to the final has already earned the club £21.9 million – meaning Pedro’s goals are already proving to be a valuable return on his investment.
A Fresh Start at Chelsea
Joao Pedro arrives at Chelsea with an impressive record. He scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for Brighton after moving there from Watford in 2023. At just 23 years old, he’s still growing, but he already looks sharp and confident.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca seems to have big plans for him. The Italian coach is rebuilding the squad and has brought in several new attacking talents this summer, including Jamie Gittens from Dortmund, Liam Delap from Ipswich, and Brazilian teenager Estevao Willian from Palmeiras. But it’s Joao Pedro who has taken the spotlight early on.
In the semi-final game, he had three shots, two of which were on target – both ending up in the back of the net. No Chelsea player had more shots on target, and only Christopher Nkunku managed as many shots overall.
But it wasn’t just about scoring. Pedro was heavily involved in the play, winning nine duels and competing in four aerial battles before being subbed off at the 60-minute mark. He gave Chelsea a strong presence up front and linked up well with his teammates.
More Than Just a Goal Scorer
One thing that stood out about Joao Pedro’s performance was how involved he was across the pitch. His touch map showed he was popping up all over the place – not just in the final third. In fact, seven of his 26 touches came inside Chelsea’s own half. He even drifted to both wings, helping build attacks and stretch Fluminense’s defence.
By comparison, fellow Chelsea forwards like Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson stayed more central in their appearances. Delap, for example, had only two touches in his own half, while Jackson also operated mostly in the opponent’s final third.
Pedro’s movement and willingness to help in different areas of the pitch show that he brings more than just goals. He brings energy, creativity, and a different dimension to Chelsea’s attack.
Coach Enzo Maresca praised him after the match, saying, “We already knew how good Joao was. Today he played deeper, but that’s part of his game – he can drop and link play, and that’s why we brought him here.”
What Next for Joao Pedro?
With the Club World Cup final just around the corner, Joao Pedro has made a strong case to start ahead of Delap and Jackson. And he’s confident in his own style.
“Every player has their own way of playing,” he said before the semi-final. “Delap has his style, Jackson has his, and I have mine. Whoever helps the team most will play.”
So far, Joao Pedro is living up to those words. His debut was everything Chelsea fans could hope for – exciting, effective, and full of promise.
After years of searching for the right man up front, spending hundreds of millions in the process, Chelsea may have finally found their answer in Joao Pedro. It’s early days, but if he keeps performing like this, he could become a key figure in Chelsea’s new era.
