Guild Wars 2 is a Great Game

A review by a sleep-deprived fan

Do you want character creation? Play Guild Wars! Do you want different classes? Play Guild Wars! Free to play? Guild Wars! Different species with great voice-acting? Guild. Wars.

The first two chapters of this game are for leveling and just overall setting the stage for the chapters to come and let me tell you it is painful! The grinding is unimaginable but so worth it when you look down at your Human/Charr/Sylvari/Norn/Asura in their armor looking for all the world like they'd rather go buy a bar and drink themselves into oblivion (Which you can do since there are drinking competitions in home instances. Not buy a bar. You can't do that but you can buy drinks!)

You can create or join a guild, and interact with like-minded people (Or you can just solo the entire thing because of crippling social anxiety like me!) Granted, solo-ing a dungeon takes a monumental amount of skill and people usually group up for them, especially if there are dungeons where you actually need more than three people for puzzles and such.

There is PvP (Player vs player), WvW (World vs world), and events you can do whenever you just want a break from the story, or if you just want to grind even more and get all of the achievements.

There is ambient dialogue scattered throughout the maps, mostly conversations but sometimes based on the lore. They're fun to listen to whenever you run past, have to do an illegal U-turn, and run back to listen to a drunk man insult someone's non-existent baby. Why? Because it's Guild Wars!

There are also little Easter eggs hidden here and there, sometimes an item, a person, an animal, a story, a song, or a sound. Just little things scattered around the world. Which leads to the concept of Map completion!

Map completion is literally just running around, completing missions, finding hidden areas, and doing jumping puzzles to get to that one little area you need in order to move on. It's fun but sometimes you get to an area where you just go 'nope' and take a 30 minute break to contemplate your life and the choices that you've made that have gotten you to that point in question. And then you chug a mug of coffee, crack your knuckles, and get to work.

Oh! Have I told you about crafting? Because that is a thing in this game. You kill enemies, and you get stuff. You can chop trees, mine ore, and murder bosses to get the things you need to craft things! The list of items you can craft is long but I'll give you the basics: Jewelry, Armor, Weapons, and Food. And, like with your character, you have to grind and level up those crafting skills to make the things you either need, or if you just want that weapon skin so that it matches with your armor.

And yes, skins are a thing. You can level up and buy in-game weapons and armors to unlock their skins, or if you want to just look good immediately you can buy sets from the gem store (And yeah, if you want to buy gems you're going to have to spend real money. Got to make revenue somehow!)

I think that's all for now honestly. My brain is absolutely fried at this point. If you want to check out Guild Wars for yourself, go ahead! Remember, it's free for PC, and if you like it you can buy the other half of the game and upgrade it!
