Embracing the Potential of Esports: A Parent's Journey

Every Discipline has the potential to empower. Gaming and Esports offer much more.
Recently, a dear friend, who happens to be a mother, reached out to me seeking advice on whether she should invest in her son's passion for Esports. Her son had requested a PlayStation 5 console with a headset, which carried a hefty price tag of approximately 9,000 Ghana Cedis. Considering the current economic crisis in Ghana, this was a significant investment that would require dipping into her Provident Fund.
After a lengthy discussion, she was convinced that placing her faith in the opportunities that Esports could bring for her child was the right decision.
First and foremost, I made sure she understood that Esports is an emerging field, driven by ever-evolving technology, and undoubtedly represents the future of work. However, I emphasized that buying a PlayStation 5 for her son does not guarantee his success in Esports. As parents, our commitment is to provide our children with access to various pathways to success, leveraging their passions.
Moreover, Esports transcends generational boundaries and challenges traditional perceptions. Many older generations view it solely as a pastime activity, unable to comprehend that gaming consoles once meant for home entertainment can become powerful tools of trade. They struggle to grasp the concept that the same PCs they were trained to use for office tasks can now be a source of immense enjoyment.
Unfortunately, misconceptions about video games, the word "play," entertainment, and youth have led some parents to dismiss Esports as inconsequential. However, with increased awareness about its tangible benefits and the showcasing of success stories, these narratives are gradually changing.
To help guide those exploring the world of Esports, I introduced the concept of FLOW. By embracing the flow of Esports, you can truly immerse yourself in its potential. Just like any other discipline in life, if you don't take a genuine interest in it, you'll never fully appreciate or love it. Tennis enthusiasts follow the sport closely, eagerly anticipating the next big event or news. Similarly, with Esports, you must follow and flow with it.
So, when it comes to keeping faith in Esports, remember this FLOW acronym:
F = Follow the Action: Stay updated with the latest happenings, tournaments, and trends in the Esports world.
L = Learn as much as possible: Equip yourself with knowledge about the games, strategies, and industry developments. Continuous learning is key.
O = Opportunities: Be on the lookout for opportunities within Esports. Consider carving out your own niche and owning your space.
W = Witness: Share your interests and aspirations with like-minded individuals. Become an advocate for Esports, just like I proudly call myself an Esports Evangelist. Remember, the more you talk about it, the more it becomes a part of who you are.
By embracing the FLOW, parents and individuals alike can navigate the world of Esports with confidence. It's a journey filled with exciting possibilities, and by keeping the faith, we create a supportive environment for our children to pursue their passions and unlock their potential.

Wild Card Weekend Recap: What Happens Now?
I think I figured out why I love Wild Card Weekend so much. It's because it's the first playoff anything of the calendar year. The NFL season starts in the fall, and once upon a time, the champion was crowned either on or slightly before New Year's. The evolution of the NFL schedule has resulted in the playoffs starting just into the New Year, and currently, the final week of the season falls on the first weekend of the New Year, with Wild Card Weekend coming a week after that. So yes, chronologically, the NFL's Wild Card Weekend serves as the first playoff anything of the calendar year.
