'COD' Logic

The Truth Behind why 'COD' Will Always Be on Top

By Charles MelloGrxPublished 8 years ago 5 min read

I started playing video games at an early age. It was a time in my life where video games were straight to the point, pixilated, and most of the time if you didn’t play with your siblings, schoolmates, or family, you played alone. It was Square Enix, the developers behind the greatness that is Final Fantasy, that made me want to understand the creativity, beauty, and the art of video games. From there I had to play everything. After RPGs, I jumped to racing sims to platformers.

The Turning Point

It wasn’t until Halo dropped into my lap, literally. My eldest brother came in from work one day and threw it into my lap while I was playing Midnight Club Dub Edition. The excitement of playing the FPS (First Person Shooter) filled me with joy that no other game had shown me. The new game that engulfed my world, was everything to me. It helped with my anger issues, it was a good place too blow off steam, as well as indulge the storyteller in me. The campaign was the greatest, it was challenging, cinematic, heart jarring, and epic. It delivered at every turn, but it wasn’t until I jumped online for the first time that everything changed.

The Birth of a 'COD' Fan Dude

Jumping ahead 2 years later, I get my first taste of Call of Duty in the form of COD 4 Modern Warfare. It was like everything I learned in my Halo days were meant to be cultivated here. Jumping straight into the campaign like I normally would at that time in my gaming days, I slaughtered the CPU on the hardest difficulty. I laughed and shrugged my shoulders with confidence in my heart, thinking to myself that’s enough of a warm up, I know I'm ready for multiplayer. I was wrong. I was bad; very bad. I averaged 10 kills a game and, for me, that’s horrible. My competitive side took over, and it was the first time I’ve played a video game that made me feel the same way I do while I’m on the football field. That was the turning point in my gaming life and as I made my way around that corner in my life, my gaming career showed itself just over the horizon.

The Golden Years of 'COD' 2009 - 2012

During this time, COD was already the powerhouse that they are currently, but the birth of COD Logic is where it gets it breathe. Every year, we’re looking forward to the next installment of COD.

November. November is a time of celebration, excitement, and of guilt that the last cod had to go on the shelf to play the next. It’s different this time around. 2008 was a crazy year for COD fans. The 2008 COD release World At War was the first in its family to bring zombies to the forefront. The zombie experience was marvelous. It gave us a chance to take a break from COD without really taking a break.

The previous years were the same, but the birth of zombies brought people back to old COD like never before. Modern Warfare, being the awesome title that it was, wasn’t hurt by the zombies community. It still gets great play time. For COD, life is great. We have variety to play, none of which is boring.

But during all this happiness, nerfs and buffs are a thing; it isn’t rampant but it is a thing.

Buffs/Nerfs

Nerfs and buffs ("nerf" meaning to weaken and "buff" meaning to make stronger) keep the game fresh and new, and it stops a lot of things from getting overused and abused. As the community developed with the game, so did the competitive community. As the completive community showed the support and love for the life that the game allowed them to have, the developers chose to put more of their wants and needs before the casual players. Developers also upped the kill time of some of the weapons and the fact that it seemed like a hand full of guns got extra treatment while others were sometimes unusable depending on what type of lobby you were in. These complaints were not enough to push the core players away, it only fueled us to better our skills, but also made us impatient for the next installment.

'Call of Duty: Ghost Infinite War' 2013

The casual community branded this the worst COD to date, granted the sells report did support the movement but it marks the time of greatness to come. They implemented a lot, they opened the battlegrounds on a lot of maps. It just seemed like this COD was catered to slower COD players. But that just wasn’t true. Other then Modern Warfare 2, it was the most balanced. You could use multiple weapons and it didn’t seem to get beat out by a handful of others. (the MTAR, Remington, and the Honey Badger was nasty lol). They also had iconic and awesome game mods that are only in Ghost. The DLC was awesome; Nerfs and Buffs weren’t that bad. It was an overall good game.

'Call of Duty: Ghost' - Proof of the Obvious

The community wanted more, they wanted different. It was giving. In spectacular fashion. We had three different CODs too play (Black Ops 2, Modern Warfare, and Ghost), all made differently, but all equally great. They all have dedicated servers, constant updates, nerf, and buffs when needed. But the community as a whole still wasn’t satisfied.

What is 'COD' logic?

COD logic isn’t hitting every shot but not getting the kill, or inconsistent hit boxes, or getting 6 hit markers, and you only need 4 to kill, or spending 200 on supply drops, and your friend down the street gets the weapon you wanted for free in a common supply drop. It's not even going 50 -2 and still losing a game.

COD logic is the love, and hate that we gamers have, when we have to wait for the next one, and the fact that the last game is almost over its peak. It’s the in-between of love and hate; the game we love to play is the game we love to hate… why? Because COD has no competition. It doesn’t have anything to compare to other than itself. We talk shit about it because if we don’t the greatness that is COD will get complacent and believe all they need to do is push out the next title. And that’s not true, nor is it right. COD is made by the same people that play it. COD is made by COD fan dudes. We're all family, we can talk shit to get other. That, in a nutshell, is COD logic. Anything else just isn’t it.
