Beloved 'Backyard Sports' Video Game Franchise Is Officially Returning
Backyard Sports Returns with Modern Fun

Get ready to relive the golden days of childhood because the iconic Backyard Sports video game franchise is officially making a comeback! Playground Productions, a company known for creating family-friendly entertainment, has announced that they are bringing back the beloved series in the coming months. Fans who grew up with these games in the late 1990s and early 2000s will soon be able to dive back into the world of backyard sports, this time with a modern twist.
The original Backyard Sports games were a staple of many childhoods. The series first hit the scene in 1997 with the release of Backyard Baseball, introducing players to the "Backyard Kids"—a colorful cast of characters like Pablo Sanchez, Stephanie Morgan, and Kenny Kawaguchi. These kids weren’t just ordinary—they were pint-sized sports stars who quickly became beloved by players of all ages. The games captured the fun of playing sports with friends in your neighborhood, adding a touch of whimsy and humor that made them unforgettable.
"We're incredibly excited to reintroduce Backyard Sports to a new generation of players," said Chris Waters, chief product officer at Playground Productions. Waters emphasized that the team is taking great care to preserve the unique look and feel that made the original games so special, while also updating them with modern features and gameplay that today’s audience expects. "I can’t wait for fans to see what we’re building on the Playground," Waters added, hinting at big things to come.
Backyard Sports didn’t stop at baseball. The franchise expanded to include games for soccer, basketball, football, and hockey. In 2001, the series took a major leap by partnering with Major League Baseball (MLB) to feature kid-sized versions of real professional athletes. Players could team up with pint-sized versions of sports legends like Randy Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr., alongside the fictional Backyard Kids. This collaboration brought a new level of excitement to the games, and the idea was so popular that it extended to other sports leagues, including the NBA, WNBA, MLS, and NHL.
However, the franchise hasn’t had a smooth path. Over the years, the rights to Backyard Sports bounced around, with little new content to show for it. But last year, the series re-entered the spotlight when retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce mentioned on his podcast that he was interested in reviving the franchise. "I’ve secretly been looking into seeing if anybody holds the rights to Backyard Baseball and Backyard Football because I want to buy it and get this thing going again," Kelce shared. Although Kelce isn’t directly involved in this reboot, his enthusiasm reflects the deep nostalgia many fans have for the series.
"Backyard Sports is more than just a game; it's a cherished part of childhood for millions of people," said Lindsay Barnett, founder and CEO of Playground Productions. Barnett sees the return of Backyard Sports as an opportunity to create content that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. "I look at media as the largest classroom in the world," she said, explaining that the relaunch of Backyard Sports perfectly embodies Playground Productions' mission.
But the excitement doesn’t stop at video games. Playground Productions has big plans to relaunch the Backyard Sports brand across multiple platforms, including merchandise, films, and television. While details are still under wraps, it’s clear that the Backyard Sports world is about to expand in ways that will delight both old fans and new players alike.
So, dust off your baseball gloves, lace up your sneakers, and get ready to join Pablo, Stephanie, and the rest of the gang for another round of backyard fun. With Playground Productions at the helm, the return of Backyard Sports promises to blend the nostalgic charm of the original games with exciting new features that will captivate players of all ages. Stay tuned for more updates as this beloved franchise prepares to make its triumphant return to the spotlight!
