7 Days to Die: A guide to getting started

For the latest alpha version

Today I figured since I talk about this game a lot, I'd give you a brief guide to getting started. Generally you begin with a few basic items, such as a torch, food, and water, along with a note. I didn't really read said note as I died soon after and spawned elsewhere. Something about crossing someone so they stripped you naked and dropped you in the middle of nowhere. Anyway on to the walkthrough.

Begin by punching things, grass, trees, and plants. Wander around and find some rocks and use those to make an axe. Then begin gathering resources and wander down the road to look for some place to spend the night. Basically grab anything you can, including looting garbage piles and bird nests. This is a great way to get feathers and eggs for food. Then you can make a bow and arrows, which are great for ranged attacks.

After gathering plenty of resources, make a bow, club, and a bedroll so if you die you can respawn where you want. I personally spawned in the middle of a forest and found a nice cabin with 2 levels and made my base on the second floor. Height is good as you can place traps below and use ranged attacks to get rid of the horde. The main thing you want to focus on now is hiding and then finding food and water.

After surviving the first night, perhaps wander over to the nearest trader and see if he has any jobs for you. If you choose to dig up something keep in mind when you get close zombies appear and once you get the loot more come. If you're able to get money it's worth it to invest in some food from the trader as it's hard to find just by wandering around.

So to sum up, gather rocks, make an axe and get wood, plants, and rocks. Make a bow and arrow and a club. Find somewhere to hide for the night or if you can't find anything make a small hut. Wander about searching for nests and garbage and gather resources. Visit the trader and do some work. But most of all, survive! If you die, that's ok because your stuff doesn't despawn, it waits patiently for you to come pick it up. You will however owe some XP to the Grim Reaper.

Now, on to surviving your first blood moon. The first is the easiest, if you have the regular settings on and generally a well fortified room up high is best. Prepare your weapons, a spear, club, and bow and arrows are your best bet. Try to limit the amount of exits and windows as that is where the zombies will congregate and try to break in. Make sure you have extra wood and perhaps even an extra axe to repair walls and doors. Create choke points, areas where the zombies have to go to get in and line them with traps if you have them.

Now, when the zombies actually come, don't be afraid to open your door and peek outside. Put a block in front so they can't just stroll right in and shoot them through the gap. If you have food and water make sure your stamina is fairly high as you need it to do attacks. I recommend lighting up your bases with candles and torches so that you can actually see them trying to get in but keep in mind this does draw in zombies at night.

I personally chose the second floor of a house and made an exit outside, and blocked off the stairs inside the house. Then I fortified one room to start, and after a while moved to a second room and fortified it. Then the final room and made sure the stairs are secure. The main floor below me was filled completely with spikes. Around the house I made a moat filled with spikes. Spikes are your best friend! Many a zombie hasn't made it to my door because of the dozens of spikes surrounding my house.

And that's a complete walkthrough of surviving your first week on 7 Days to Die. Thanks for giving me a read and hopefully this helps you out. Stay safe, and wash your hands.
