The Pursuit of Passion: Unleash Your True Potential
A Journey to Finding Your Calling and Living a Life of Fulfillment
"the only way to do great work is to love what you do." Steve Jobs
How to Find and Follow Your Passion
Starting off on the path to your vision can feel like looking into a dark tunnel. There is an overwhelming sense of uncertainty and you doubt if what you’re searching for is truly worth the effort. But once you’ve made the decision to follow your dreams and unlock your passion, you’ve already taken the first and greatest step. Here’s a guide to finding and following your passion!
Identify Your Passions
The first step in finding and following your passions is to determine what interests you the most and what truly motivates you. Think deeply and honestly about what makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning. Would you rather be managing a team of people, designing products, starting a business, creating art, or teaching children? Knowing your passions gives you a clearer sense of where you’re headed, helping you stay the course.
Be Open to Learning
Once you’ve identified your passions, the next step is to become a student. Researching and studying your field will help your understanding and knowledge grow. Spend time with people from different backgrounds and speak to experts in the field. If a teenager wants to become a lawyer, they should take classes and read books about the legal system. If a young professional decides to pursue a career in the fashion industry, they should learn about the latest trends, walk the floors of fashion houses, and attend trade shows.
Take Action
Learning will give you the foundation you need, but to truly make progress, it’s not enough to simply gain understanding—you have to take action. If you want to become a chef, look for internships or volunteer opportunities in the kitchen. Join co-working spaces or collaborate with other professionals in the field. Taking action with deliberate focus and intentionality are needed to manifest your vision.
Network
Finding connections in the field you’re interested in is a great way to get your foot in the door. Attend relevant conferences and forums and introduce yourself to people who are in the same boat as you. Meeting new people and professionals in your chosen field will not only provide you with opportunities, but it may also help you find a mentor. A mentor can provide you with additional guidance and support in your journey.
Be Ready for Failure
At some point, embarking on your personal journey towards success will run into a few bumps in the road. It is important to recognize that failure does not represent an ultimate endpoint to your journey, but a form of learning. Viewing setbacks as permanent defeats will keep you from pushing past them. Instead, take each obstacle as a learning moment and use it to find solutions to the challenge.
Have Patience
Just because you wish to make your dreams come true now, doesn’t mean they will happen overnight. Take your time and take each task one step at a time. The key is to stay consistent in whatever you’re doing, and make sure you enjoy the process too! No matter how big or small the accomplishment, stay positive and press on.
Following your passion is an incredibly rewarding experience, but it is a journey with no arriving point—it is about the journey itself. Make sure to take your time and be patient with yourself. Once you have identified, learned from, and taken action on your dreams, the path that awaits you is going to be truly remarkable. So begin now and let yourself pave the way with each step!
