Employing a precise technique honed over two decades, he carefully spirals around the tree, allowing the sap to drip into his collection tray. Timing is critical, as collecting the liquid latex too late can result in lower-quality crumb rubber, suitable for items like car tires but unsuitable for mattresses.

From Sap to Foam:

During the low season, around 140 liters of natural latex per day find their way into Doroteo's buckets, doubling during the winter months. The collected sap is then taken to a processing facility, where it sits for 12 hours before undergoing the Dunlop process, a 19th-century method for converting liquid latex into foam. This method is not only energy-efficient but also helps stabilize the latex. The liquid latex is mixed with stabilizers, whipped into foam, and then heated with radio waves to vulcanize and harden the latex.

From Core to Mattress:

Approximately 40 tons of liquid latex foam move from the processing facility to the mattress core factory every week. For each 30-kilogram mattress, about 50 kilograms of liquid latex is required. The cores are set, washed, dried, and squished before packaging. At this factory alone, around 600 mattresses are produced each week. These cores are then shipped to a facility in Los Angeles, where Avocado, a renowned company, transforms them into the final mattresses, ready to be sold.

The Pursuit of Sustainability:

The entire process, from the rubber tree plantation to the final mattress, falls under the umbrella of Grupo Fortaleza, dedicated to sustainable liquid latex production in southern Guatemala. Christian Closes' family has overseen Guateelinda for over five decades, adhering to rigorous standards. Their plantation is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, ensuring no child labor, the use of organic products, and compliance with local laws. The facilities also hold Global Organic Latex Standard certification, confirming that 95% or more of their products are made from certified organic latex. These certifications not only add value to the final product but also contribute to the higher price tag.

Navigating Fluctuating Markets and Challenges:

The natural rubber market has experienced fluctuations in demand and prices, often influenced by the automotive industry. Recent geopolitical tensions and reduced production in countries like China have caused natural rubber prices to decrease. However, during periods of low prices, workers on plantations are at risk of exploitation. Certifications like the Global Organic Latex Standard aim to incentivize companies to maintain high standards and support sustainable practices.
