The golden temple
The site on which the Golden Temple rests has been a space for quiet reflection for centuries. Originally a small lake in the middle of a forest, many saints and sages have stopped here to meditate and dip in the holy waters. Both the Buddha and Guru Nanak have been known to have meditated here, but it was through the blessing of Guru Ram Das, his excavation of the pond and the founding of Amritsar, that it has become the center that it is today.

Disease is something that human kind has learned to live with as a way of life. Today’s article involves one of the most famous presidents in US history, President Theodore Roosevelt. He was known for shaking things up and kind of making his own way. In 1901, he did something that wouldn’t seem too controversial to us today. Certainly not. He had someone over for dinner, you know. He’s the president at this time. He’s pretty busy in general. But because he’s the president of the United States, even the smallest of social decisions carry enormous weight in symbolism for the public. It’s not like you or I casually inviting a new friend or new coworker to have some lasagna or something. This is always going to be interpreted as a statement.

The medieval and Renaissance period has witnessed some bizarre and strange fashion fads. The female corsets that started as a bodice evolved as a tight-laced garment leading to the health hazards of women. Crinolines became popular for their silhouette but creating several risks to women's life. Chopines (high platformed shoes) were worn as a symbol of wealth but lead to an inelegant gait to the women. Powdered wigs started as a fashion fad but were used to cover male baldness and philandering.

Those Pesky Shifting Vowels
Two of the more interesting classes I had in college were "Linguistics" and "History of the English Language." In Linguistics I learned that a glottal stop is that weird choking noise some people make instead of a "t" sound when they say, "button." When they say it, it usually comes out "BUH-in" with a little catch in the middle, no "t." In History of the English Language, I learned why my friend Jim from California and even our own professor, who was from Pennsylvania, could not tell the difference between the names Don and Dawn. The reason was the Great Vowel Shift. History can tell you approximately when it happened, but there are no definitive reasons why.
